Farmall Cub Touch Control Block Rebuild

Hey guys I been noticing a few drop of oil on the floor in my garage the last few weeks. Well about 3 days ago I noticed a decent puddle on the floor every day when I went down to the garage. I thought it was leaking oil from the rear seal. However on closer inspection it is the touch control leaking and running down the side of the torque tube and collecting on the inspection hole cover then dripping on the floor so I guess it's time for the rebuild. 1000000701.jpg
 
Does anyone know a good source for step by step instructions to rebuild it? This makes me nervous cause I know nothing about hydraulics and there looks like it has a lot of parts.
 
There are some real good posts about rebuilding the TC unit here and someone will post links to it. My suggestion is to only start the rebuild when you have all the parts and the time to do the complete rebuild. Take pictures as you disassemble it so you know how it should go back together.

It looks like the fluid may be leaking from the Control Valve, it is on the front of the Touch Control, and moves when you move the lever. The Control Valve has an o ring, and they leak when worn.
If you want to only replace the Control Valve o ring, and not rebuild the whole unit, you don't have to remove the Touch Control head, which is on the rear of the unit.
It is less work to replace only the Control Valve o ring. The Control Valve slides out the front of the unit.
Below is a listing for the o ring at TM Tractor Parts, you can look at the pictures, there is a picture of where it goes on the page. They have said on here the o ring is a special size. It is a Case IH part, it says.

Feel the opening before putting the valve in to be sure it is smooth, any roughness can cut the new o ring. Sand off any roughness, wipe off all sanding with a clean rag.
Use plenty of new Hy-Tran fluid on the valve when putting it back in the unit.

Below are pictures.
Pic 1 shows fluid leaking where the Control Valve would leak. Your picture is dark, and I can't see where the fluid is much.
Pic 2, from TM Tractor Parts, shows the front of the Touch Control with the rockshaft off, the Control Valve is at the lower right in the pic.
The unit could be leaking from the piston, which is above the Control Valve.
I would use a light and try to see where it is leaking.

Thanks, I will get a few more pics tomorrow and post them. If I only have to replace 1 o ring that would be great.
 
There are basically two different Touch Control (TC) Blocks that use different rebuild kits, based on the block part number cast on the block.

TM Tractors carries both kits:
Block #351981R1 or 354383R1 through 354383R4:

Block #360719R1:

The HOW TO Section has instructions for each block.

Thread 'Old Style Touch Contol BlockRebuild'

I am rebuilding an old style touch control block Casting number 351686R1 (The early Touch Control part numbers are 351981R1, and 354383R1 through 354383R4. Credit @Glen) on a 1948 Cub. The old style has some significant differences from the new style. I have searched this sight as best I could for a step by step repair complete with pics.like troop has done for the new style but cannot seem to find anything. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Otherwise I will document my rebuild and post it as I go.

Thread 'Hydraulic Block Rebuild'

This is a rebuild for hydraulic block 360719R1. Different block(s) will require different parts so make sure to get the right rebuild kit. There are some variances as well but this should still be of assistance. The pictures should tell the story on their own. As has been previously noted on the forum, the replacement filter (screen) is a bit too long. You will have to make it fit as best as you can (it is about an 1/8 inch too long).

The Control Valve o ring can be replaced from the front, like I posted above.
If the Piston o rings are leaking, the head has to be removed to replace them. The Piston comes out the rear of the unit.
I would use rags or something to clean the leaking fluid, then run it and see if you can see where the fluid is coming out. :)
 
be careful of the steiner kit, the oring for the control valve shaft I found does not give the correct one, only place I have gotten the right one is from IH, its a odd ball

I didn't have a good experience with Steiner on my rebuild either. Things didn't fit right and I had to order parts that fit from other sources.
 
the oring is about 1" od but very "fat" for that size, your old one will probably be worn down, that is why they leak but you can see the diff in thickness, it would stand right out from the others
 
I noticed that the Steiner kit is universal for both older and newer blocks. Do the Steiner issues apply to O-Rings for both block styles?
