R.O.C.K Restoration Project

I would like to mention that my wife and I will be joined by Bill and Jo Hudson, of Madison OH, at the Barn Dance event this Saturday.

Many of you, if not all, know Bill is a TX A&M alumni. He loves him some Aggies. ROCK, also loves A&M and has a close relationship. This affiliation along with Bill's love of these tractors, and warm weather, has convinced him that he should be here to insure Rocky gets the best representation possible.

Not only is Bill traveling to TX to attend the event, he donated a step and sign to complete Rocky's outfit. He has agreed to participate in the sale of Rocky by offering his expert advice, answering questions potential buyers may have, and mostly sharing his Cub experiences and making new friends. I look forward to hearing some his stories.

Below is a link to the online bidding for Rocky. I believe it is self explanatory.

edit by Jim Becker: fixed the link.

Tim,

Jo and I are certainly looking forward to meeting you folks and having a great time.

I would be terribly remiss if I did not thank you for your gracious hospitality and making it extremely easy to say yes when you asked us to come. (Folks, Tim rolled out the Texas hospitality carpet in a BIG way.) As I told you in one of our conversations, I was crazy for ever leaving Texas, but that ship sailed long ago.

GIG 'EM AGGIES!!!!

Bill

Thanks for fixing the link, Jim. Not sure how I mis-copied it.

I've put a couple hours on Rocky now and currently have only two issues.

1. Transmission - First and reverse gears are still noisy, while 2nd and 3rd are not. I received an idler gear today and will go thru the effort to change if that has been know to make a difference.

My other tractor is quite in all gears.

2. Lights not working - I plan on removing paint tomorrow. Does the switch need to ground to the panel same as the ignition switch? I removed paint from the ignition switch hole as well as the light switch. Maybe I need to remove more paint from the light switch because now the ignition switch works great.

Tim, if you have power on the wires at the lights it’s a ground issue between the light housing and the hood all the way to the frame. Doesn’t take much to keep them from working after a repaint. Don’t think the switch needs to be grounded.

After a complete resto I have had to lightly sand the clips on the lights to get a good ground.Beautiful looking cub!

Got 6.4 volts at the back of the screw(s) connecting the wire to the light(s) ...going to remove paint where the headlight attaches to the head light post on all three lights.

Since I have one extra transmission cover gasket (seems like I ended up with half a dozen of those... now I know why), a new idler gear, 1.5 days and a Team Cub member at my disposal for a few hours, I am going to change the gear and inspect the bushing while in there. If my memory serves me correctly, the current idler gear has some wear but the bushing is nice and tight.

Edit: You can see part of the idler gear in the picture above. Does it look like that could cause the noise? or is it something else? I did replace both sliding gears.

if you only replaced the top gears it may be because of the lower gears were worn also so when new gears mesh with the worn ones you get noise, is the imput shaft pitted where it rides in the rear bearing, common cause of noise on these and gears get blamed instead

OK...after pulling the transmission cover and inspecting the idler gear, it became painfully obvious that the gear was not coming out without a split. So, its Not happening!
Tranny Idler.jpg

I noticed a fat 1/16th inch gap or slop in the idler gear. Can I "shim" the gear towards the front of the transmission which looks like it would align the gears better, or does the gear need the slop?

I replaced the top sliding gears and none of the lower gears.

I’ve had a couple of noisy transmissions and I have found it isn’t the idler gears directly causing the noise, but a worn idler shaft and bushing. Replacing those, along with all the bearings, usually kills the Cub howl. Tried a new reverse idler one time and it made it worse.I suppose because the gears hadn’t worn together over 60 plus years. Expensive stock item I keep

Looks like Rocky will be going to Dance in cognito. I had mylar decals on him originally and decided to remove and apply vinyl cut since they are higher quality...so they say.

Either I got a bad batch of stickers or I am just a big dummy. When trying to remove the backing paper, about 80% or so would release the other part remained on the sticker, leaving a thin film of paper that would not come off. Wetting with water helped, but what a mess. Only the two major decals on the side failed, the smaller ones no problems. Should have left the mylar stickers alone. After spending hours early this morning trying to make them work It became obvious that it was not meant to be. Oh well, still learning patience.

Thank you all sooooo much for your support, advice and donations. Simply put, Rocky would not be here if it were not for you. :hattip:

I will provide an update tomorrow. Have a great day everybody!

I am happy to announce that Rocky is moving up in this world. He was sold last night at the Barn Dance and in doing so contributed $7,500 to the more than $500,000 raised...not to mention, he added tremendously to the theme and ambience!

ROCK was also prepared for the lack of side emblems....kinda made him look unique, at least for the event.

For me, the event was better than last years, primarily due to sharing the experience with Jo and Bill Hudson. What a treat! And it gets even better. Rocky's new owners live not too far away from us and we have been granted visitation "rights" :D

FANTASTIC! You should be very proud! And I must say this has to have been one of the best threads to follow!! I will miss your posts :( ........

....so! What's on the board for this year??!! :big smile:

Tim, what a great thing you and your wife did and continue to do for such a great cause. God is good and this is proof. What y’all have done is so awesome. It’s been a great thread to follow and how meticulous you’ve been with this tractor says a lot about you and your wife. Thank you for letting us be a part of it.

Congratulations!! You should be very proud, that was quite an accomplishment, you did a fantastic job. The new owner will have a wonderful Cub that will give them years of enjoyment. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us, I enjoyed following the thread.

That was nice of you to include Jo and Bill and gracious of them to come and share the event with you. As I am sure you found out, there are not any better people than them!

Thanks again,

Well done Tim, It has been a pleasure following along with your build of “Rocky”. What a great gift for such a wonderful cause. It was easy from the spectators chair. I’m sure it wasn’t near so easy for you at times. You persevered and you prevailed. Attaboy!! What’s next?
