Proper Oil Filter for my 1949 Farmall Cub

Hi,
Just wondered, what does the hole in the other end of the Steiner oil filter measure.
If it is the same, it is defective. They might have put on 2 ends with the small hole, not sure, you didn't show a pic of both ends of it.

The holes in the Fleetguard oil filter that I bought at a Case IH dealer measure .560", and .440".

It looks like the right bolt in your pic.
The gasket might work, you can try it and see.

The governor spring will probably work the same as intended, but I've never bought one from them.
The original one would have had a lot of stretching in years of use.
The governor doesn't need any servicing, except you could lube the linkage arm pivot, on top of the governor. Try to work oil into both ends of the pivot. They get dry and stuck sometimes from no lube. :)
Thanks so much Glen.
The other end is smaller. I only measured with a tape measure and the inside diam was a little less than 7/16" and hence will not fit on 1/2" bolt shaft. The other end is even smaller maybe like the .440"

Thanks on the governor advice as I am doing this for the first time.

Hi,
I should have written above, the governor doesn't need servicing, if it was working normally.
The 2 pins that hold the weights on, and the holes in the weights for them can sometimes wear, and become loose, after lots of use. They are inside the governor assembly.
If it was working normally, it is probably ok.

Below is a pic from TM Tractor, the weights are on the left.

Your oil filter bolt looks correct. If you have a NAPA around you, get a filter from there and it should work and also have the gasket.

WildFarmall is right. My brother-in-law was driving past Steiner's over the holidays and I got him to pick me up a bunch of parts including the WIX filter. Our cub is in pieces but I just checked the filter with our bolt and we have exactly the same issue. I also have a filter I got from CASE fifteen years ago when the tractor was running, and that filter fits just fine on our bolt. So there mist be a problem with a recent production run of WIX filters.

Thanks so much Glen! I will probably just clean thoroughly, oil, and hope for the best.

Thanks so much cjack! Finally someone sees what I am talking about! When I let Steiner know what the problem was they only would say that I have the correct filter. Maybe their run of Wix filters for this model are defective. Did you let them know? I could get a refund if I sent it back but as the shipping and effort (boxing, ect) would be more than the $10.45 I paid it is not worth it and will be my loss. The clerk I spoke with on the phone was pleasant but, evidently, could do nothing more. This is after I have spent close to $1k in parts in the last 2-3 weeks! Please tell them that you had a problem also!

I sent them an email this morning, also telling them it seems more than one person has this problem. I expect to return the filter next time my brother-in-law drives past their store. (What I would suggest you do is request a $10 discount on your next order.) I looked up WIX and they have a website and a phone number, was thinking of giving them a call. The spec diameter of the larger side opening is 0.502", I think they put the same (smaller side) cap on each end of the filter.

Thanks. The diameter of the inside hole is definitely not .502" - I rough measured it (did not use a caliper) with a ruler and it is more like 7/16". I will write them or call them when I get the chance.

Happy tractoring to you!

I ordered one of those filters November 17, 2018, but I still hadn't used it yet. I'll get it out this evening (if I can remember to do so) and measured both ends.

On the Wix data sheet, the hole diameters are reversed. They install with the print on the side of the filter upside down. That was what I noticed on the one I installed the other day. The Wix that I took out had the print right side up. A minor goof on the part of Wix.

Yep, I noticed that too.

Reads like another case of where I say , "somewhere a Chinese guy is laughing".
And many has been the time.

OK _ Maybe this is the final chapter on the "Misfit Filter" for my 1949 Cub: I called Steiner today and they acknowledged that there was a problem with this batch of Wix filters. They are checking their stock and will send a correct replacement filter. If you had a problem like mine (and I know that there were a few others that did) I suggest you call Steiner, or wherever you bought it, and get a replacement.
Happy trails to you all!

Thank you for the update.
And your patience! :tractor:

I measured my oil filter and one end is 13/32, the other end measures 7/16. Also, the side where it's seamed, is caved in a bit top to bottom. I emailed Steiner just now.

They should send you a replacement as they said they would do for me. I am new at this and Steiner seems to be a good company but there appear to be cheaper sources for parts available..

Hi all,
First, we want to thank you for bringing this to our attention. As you’ve all noted, we are selling a Wix filter and have been for some time. It does seem that many of those that Wix sent recently have the incorrect hole diameter. I want to apologize for anyone that felt their problem wasn’t understood properly by our staff here. We strive to take product issues very seriously and I escalated this situation to the General Manager and the President to ensure we are communicating at all levels of our staffing these type of product issues and are making it right and not hassling about a return.

Currently, we have a staff member from our Quality Control team sorting through all of the filters on the shelf and testing them with the bolts from the Farmall Cub to ensure proper fit. Right now, the Bad pile is larger than the Good pile, but we do have confirmed good ones to ship out if anyone is still in need.

We also read what you wrote in regards to the overall filter diameter. Dan Steiner is having our purchasing team research other available filters and we may be making a switch from the Wix filter because of that 1/4” overall diameter difference you identified. However we do like the fact that Wix encapsulates their cartridge filters with steel which is why we choose them over other less expensive filters.

I want to make sure that you all have an open line of communication at Steiner Tractor Parts. We have learned so much from the group of fine folks on this forum, your experience and knowledge are vital to this hobby and I thank you for all the work you do to promote tractor restoration and especially to help out newbies. Your forum is a wonderful place for guys to gain knowledge and insight into their tractor and that includes our own team here at Steiner!

Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you ever hit any road blocks at Steiner Tractor Parts. I’ve posted here before and wish I had more time to be more active. My name is Elizabeth Whiting. Technically, my primary responsibility at Steiner these days is our website, SteinerTractor.com and also our tractor club outreach program (any tractor club guys, hit me up for program details this year). However, I am willing and able to get you in touch with whomever you need based on your request if I cannot assist myself. I created a special email alias for you guys to use, farmallcub@steinertractor.com. This will put you directly into my email inbox. I’ve worked here for 18 years and am glad to serve as a point of contact for this group. Also, if you prefer a bit more anonymity, we also accept any and all customer feedback at customerexperience@steinertractor.com. I do not personally monitor or receive those emails like I do the one above, but emails to that address should also be routed to the proper parties. If there are threads here that could use Steiner input, please feel free to send me the links.

Thank you again for all of the research and explanations and pictures in this thread. It is very helpful.
