Proper Oil Filter for my 1949 Farmall Cub

Last week I ordered an oil filter for my 1949 Farmall Cub from Steiner Tractor (their part no. ABC 093) and they sent a Wix filter # 51153. When I tried it today it would not fit. the hole in the cente is 7/16" and my bolt is 1/2". Additionally, my old filter is 2 1/2" across and the Wix is only 2 1/4". In any case the filter would not work. When I called Steiner about the problem they said that they had sent the right filter and that there was no other filter that they had that would work. They said that they would give me my money back if I sent it back. I paid $10.45 plus shipping and since sending it back would cost just as much I am stuck with it. At least I can use the rubber gasket. Am I missing something? I just spent close to $1k with Steiner on parts and you would think they would be a little more forgiving on the error. I checked their catalogue and it seems that the ABC 093 is the only filter for the Cub. Has anyone else had this problem?

Not sure about the WIX number but I think the hole is a different size on each end. Have you tried the bolt in the opposite end? Is the bolt the correct part? Someone might have substituted one in the past. I found this by using the search feature. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=97234&p=765502&hilit=filter+bolt+size#p765463
Same problem I am having. I realize the holes on either end are different sizes but :I

Yeah the holes are different. Even with that they are a tight fit. 51153 is the correct number. 1153 from Napa which is the same.

I will try again tomorrow but I do not see how it will fit in either direction. If the center bolt that I have is the wrong one for my 49 Cub then the lid was changed also as they are a perfect fit. I guess someone could have changed both a long time ago but I think that is unlikely as I think mine came this way. But despite the fact that I? have had my Cub for 20 years I am new at this.

I had the same problem with the wix filter a month ago so I installed a baldwin pt135 filter I had on hand but will also look into the wix problem to. my cublow boy is a 1959

You have the correct bolt, just turn the filter around as the others have said and you will be good to go. The hole is definitely bigger on one end than the other.

Hi,
Below is a page from the 1949 Cub owner's manual showing the oil filter assembled in the oil filter chamber, and the bolt used for the filter. The size of the bolt is smaller near the bottom end.
Also, it has to have the oil hole for the oil to run back to the oil pan.

Below is the 1949 Cub owner's manual, if you don't have it. The experts on here recommend reading it, it has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. There is a table of contents on page 1.

I just put a Wix 51153 in my Lo-Boy the other day, it may be a snug fit and it may be a tight fit but it will fit. Trust us, you have the correct filter.

A couple of years ago I started having trouble with the Frams. The smaller of the two holes seem to be a bit undersize,I'm thinking the manufacturing die's are worn or the new die's are made overseas and are metric on that end  You actually have to thread the bolt through the hole,it's that tight. What I have been doing is before I put it in the canister is to thread the bolt in the filter from the opposite way until I can get the smooth shoulder of the bolt up to that stamped hole in the filter plate. I then carefully "wobble" the bolt until it fits through that hole. You don't want to over do it,you only want the bolt to just fit smoothly through.
The first time I had this happen I forced the bolt through while the filter was in place in the engine. Made a big project trying to get it out on the next oil change....

As mentioned ,try the bolt in the other end of the filter. Seems I almost thread mine on at the lower hole to get bolt threaded end started through it after bolt passes through top hole.
Then of course usually have to remove it to add copper washer and lid.....And after snugging it all down , then spot the gasket basking feet away from the filter housing and watching the proceedings with casual disinterest.

Old filter diameter vs new? Ha..
My 48 's filter on it when first acquired , had a filter that barely fit inside the housing diameter. No idea what it was.

Thanks everyone. I tried it again today and it will not fit. I realize one side is bigger than the other. The big hole is too small for the bolt shaft to fit through. The hole diameter is 7/16" and maybe I could ream it to 1/2" but should not have to. I found a filter locally that will work. It is a Car Quest 85153 022118 (this is the number printed on the filter housing). This filter fits perfectly and is 2 & 1/2 inches wide with a 1/2 inch hole (on the large hole). Additionally the old filter that I took out is a Baldwin 1111101 3342 (also the number printed on the filter) and it fits perfectly. I tried cross referencing these two filters with Wix and had no luck (or maybe I did not do it right.
Thanks to the person who sent the 1949 manual. In it I notice the bolt has a washer or a gasket. My bolt does not have the washer or gasket. The bolt head fits snug on the canister cap and I do not see any leaks. Any suggestions on this? I am so appreciative of everyone's comments.

Hi,
Good that you found an oil filter that fits well.
Lucky that the oil filter top doesn't leak without the washer.
The oil filter bolt uses a copper washer.
Below is a listing at TM Tractor for a new copper washer for the oil filter bolt.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/en/287fp.htm

You might find a copper washer at NAPA, or other auto parts store. I would take the bolt along, to be sure the washer fits on it. They have said on here before to be sure it is a copper washer, so it will seal well.
Sometimes I have needed to put a little non hardening sealer on the washer, to make it stop leaking oil, but yours may not need that.

Below is the cover gasket, they should have that also. :)

Trust me it will not fit - unless I ream it out with a punch or drill. Either I have a defective filter, or they put the wrong filter in the 51153 box, or for some reason my bolt diameter is larger than it should be (this is unlikely in my opinion). The large hole is 7/16" when it should be 1/2". The 1/2 " fits snug as everyone describes.
