Picked up a John Deere BO at auction

You're a brave man! I would have been afraid to weld it myself. I probably would have had the head milled down enough to clean it up. Preheating and peening it was the correct process so it's obvious you know what you're doing. I enjoy looking over your shoulder while you work on the BO so thanks for allowing us to do that!
It was too deep to just mill it out so I was forced into this coarse of action. I did practice on an old junk cracked Minneapolis Moline head to get the heat settings where I wanted.

My brother dropped in and set the head up and milled it. I had to go in and re-weld a spot that I didn't get all of the rust removed so the weld flaked at the edge. Looks better the second time and after machining looks like it will make a good gasket surface. Had some porosity in the first weld also but it is all covered by the head gasket. The second weld gave a nice smooth edge. This is the first time I have ever welded a cast iron head so there is lots of room for improvement. Hope this works but still a long ways to go.

Pulled the oil pump and cleaned the first layer of sludge from the crankcase on the John Deere BO. Lifted the oil screen up off the pump body and it had a thick layer of sludge. Lots of cleaning to do and I also have to do the transmission.

Cleaned up the oil pump. The gasket was broken so I looked around for a replacement and only found .020 thick available. This had a .010(thin) gasket that used to be offered in gasket sets. Ended up finding some gasket material in the shop so I made my own. Just need to wrap the screen with mechanics wire and install the fitting and it will be ready to put back in the tractor. Started draining the trans and rear axle. Lots of sludge in there also.

Pulled the seat, draw bar, and rear floor pan to get access to the rear axle cover. Pulled it off and found the sludge that wouldn't drain out of the plug. Should be able to clean it good with this access.

LOL!! I remember pulling the drain plug on my Model B's transmission to drain it after I got it home after buying it. I placed a 5 gallon bucket under the transmission and pulled the drain plug. Nasty old oil started pouring into the bucket. Then I heard a clunk in the bottom of the bucket. Turns out it was a tooth cleanly broken off of one of the transmission gears. I secured a good used replacement gear and reassembled the transmission and never had an issue again.

Hopefully I don't find any gear teeth and it would be nice if it doesn't need any bearings replaced.

Looks like grease in there. Yuk. You'll appreciate all the hard work and attention to detail when it's all together. Looking forward to seeing the progress.
I've found this in quite a few old tractors. Don't know if the old gear lube does this or if something has been added to make it that way.

Back on the cylinder head today. My brother stopped in and touched up the valves on the Valve grinder. I pressed out the worn out guides and installed a set of good one that I stole out of another head. These guides were never run just installed and the project was abandoned out in a blackberry bush for years before an old school mate got the tractor and we were able to get it from him. Next weekend we plan on grinding the seats.

Hit the outside surface of the head and block in the blast cabinet to remove the rest of the paint and rust. Sprayed them down with Ospho after that. I may try shooting some epoxy primer on them tomorrow. The new valve spring arrived today.

I can smell that sludge, yuck!!

Used a siphon spray nozzle and a couple long engine cleaning brushes and managed to get the Trans/Rear end clean enough. Rinsed out the crankcase also. I'll check it over again once the solvent dries but I think it should be ready for assembly. I still need to clean the rear end cover but that should go pretty easy.

Sprayed some oil resistant insulating paint on the rear cover and made a new gasket. Ready to install.
