Need help with my cub

if you have good compression #s 85 lbs or more , squirt some carburator cleaner in the carb while trying to start it, if it does not fire, it has a not enough spark or timing issue

by pull starting,--- you can tell if it backfires, starts, or at least fires. they gotta turn over fast to start! --- at least mine does. No crank starting here anyway,---only pull starts or with starter and 12-volts which always starts them.
Gas running out of the bottom of the carb dont mean its getting to the cylinders! Dumping gas in the plug above the carb wets the upper areas and always starts them or at least they fire then you can work down from there. carb jet only needs a hair stuck in it to stop them too!

Hey everyone! Sorry I've been mia but Cubbie has been running like a charm up until she didn't. Hubby was cutting grass, neighbor stopped by and he shut her off. When he started her up, he choked/stalled her when putting her in gear. She hasn't started since then. He has gone over all electrical and fuel parts several times and can't find anything wrong. He did find the carburetor was warped so we bought a new one (thanks TM Tractor Parts) and thought that would solve the issue. It didn't, but she does have good fuel flow. He's checked the timing 3 times and it appears to be correct. You can pull the start lever and she'll turn over but never acts like she'll start/fire up. Is there anything he's missing? Please point us in the right direction. I've searched on this board and found a lot of solutions but none have helped. I told him I was going to go to the pros...so here I am asking for help again. lol
Here is what the issue is.
the little push pull start stop button is broken or wore out.
that’s the only option due to all other things that have been checked are working

I'm not following this thought, If that were the case, how would there be spark at the plugs???? Easy check, disconnect the kill switch wire at the magneto. JMHO Stan

OK..my two cents...Fouled or washed out plugs...take each one out and check for spark......if spraying with starter fluid, and not poppin off...spark issure or timing......cap off mag,or dist,,,is it rotating?????

IF kill switch is broke,or shorted out you will NOT have spark at the plugs! Put in new plugs that are not contaminated and try that. You may have messed up the plugs that are in it with repeated starting attempts.

Good luck it’s probably something simple.
Every time I’ve had one not restart, it was either the condenser or the coil.
When I had them die while running, main jet, clogged inlet screen at the carb, plugged fuel inlet at the tank.
Gas fouled plugs had been covered
Honda coil issue?? Spark looks good and on time in free air, but not enough to start under compression. Had a civic teach me that. New coil fixed that engine.

We replaced that when we first got her. It has a toggle switch now. He's checked that out and it's getting juice to it.

Old plugs weren't bad but we replaced them after this occurred. Spark is good. Not sure about anything rotating. Will have to ask him.

We do have spark. And new plugs:)

Thanks! That's what I keep saying. It's going to be something simple but what? lol We have good fuel flow so I don't think there's any trash blocking anything. I'll let him know about the coil issue. We may need to get another one just to rule it out. Thank you all for the tips!! We've got to find time to try to pull start her and see if that works. We've had a lot going on the last month (sickness in the family) and that has topped finding out what's wrong with Cubbie. Once things settle down we can get back to figuring this out.

I hope I understand that this is not to be taken literly!! That toggle switch is simply to kill (stop) the engine by grounding the magneto. Otherwise, no electrical power should be there. Stan

This reminds me of a problem with a mag several years ago. Had great spark at the plugs but nothing would get it to fire a cylinder. What I found was that the little pinion gear was worn and was not engaging the rotor but would rotate on a-hit and miss but was not in time with the piston. Replaced the gear and the engine ran.

On the internet, looks like Brillman has the best price, about $40 for the J4 mag rotor and about $10 for the gear. I didn't look at shipping cost. Stan

Thanks to you all for the great advice! He's got more things to check out! Keep the ideas coming! If we end up having to pull start her, I hope we'll be able to do it at the end of the week.

That's an excellent point to make. Had a friend that had a similar incident, whenever the engine was stopped the rotor/pinion would jump time 1 tooth. Had to correct the rotor/pinion alignment every time in order to restart it. It would not jump time/alignment as long as the engine was running. Stan

We haven't had time to do anything just yet. We decided to replace a few things (plug wires, etc.) so we're waiting on the order to come in. Hopefully we'll be able to update with better news in the near future.
