joe in mississippi carburetor/governor

Hello. I'm new to Mississippi (from Alaska) and new to cub tractors. I'm quite familiar with mechanical things, 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, cars, trucks, motorcyles.
I have a question about the governor/carb setup. I can get the engine to start and idle but the minute I move the governor lever to pick up some speed the governor shuts off the carb and the engine shuts down. I'd like to disconnect the gov rod from the carb and manually operate the carb to see if there's a fuel delivery problem or if it's the governor. It seems that the engine should run and pick up without the governor if I'm careful to keep control of the throttle lever. Do any of you have an opinion on this?
I've reviewed many of the posts and subjects and will be referring to them but wanted an opinion about the carb. Thanks.
 
Joe, Welcome to the Forum. You have your question in the Cub Cadet forum and I'm wondering if you have a CC or a regular Cub. If it's a regular Cub, I'd suggest removing the main jet (brass hex head on the side of the carb). Clean it will a thin copper wire. If that doesn't help, remove the drain plug on the bottom of the carb, open the sediment bowl shut off, and see if you have a steady flow for at least a couple of cups. If the flow drops off, you have a blockage in the gas inlet screen, the sediment bowl ,gas tank, or elsewhere.

If you have a Cub, a standard tractor, check the location of the throttle and choke levers on the carburetor. It's easy to get them in the wrong carburetor lever hole.
 
Thanks for the tips and links. I've done some of the basic fuel flow tests and it appears to be ok on fuel flow. Ill have access to the original manual next week and will have more specific data about its origin.
 
I think it's a cub cadet but not sure. I'll be at the lake tomorrow and will check the original manual. It's all new to me, this tractor world. I'm intmately familiar with 30s to 80s cars, snowmobiles and 4wheeler but never got into tractors. I'll post tomorrow what it is. Thanks.
