Circle Cub

I have 1947 Cub #4028 and I know it is just outside the Circle Cub cutoff point. It has been repainted a couple of times, and not very good jobs at that. I just removed the grill and dog legs getting ready to remove the hood, sand it down and at least make it look a little better. As I rotated the one dog leg I saw a circle, very faint, under the layers of paint. It is the size of the Circle Cub decal and looks like they pulled the decal off but left the adhesive around the edge. There is no way to know if it is the original dog leg since I've only had it since last April. I'm going to remove the paint on the other dog leg very carefully to see if there is a decal there also; it has much thicker paint layers than the other one.
 
The 1947 we had was serial #1447. I found the circle decals on it, here's what they looked like.

It is possible that it is a circle Cub. I had heard there were only 3500 or so Circle Cubs out there. That would put it in the 4000 serial number range. What does it say on the hood? Do you have pix?
 
If it did originally have the circle Cub decals, I believe they would have been water transfer decals, not vinyl or mylar with adhesive.
 
I thought they would be water transfer also. I got the dog legs in the basement under a better light and I could see the circle on the left one also. Put the two next to each other and the 'circles' lined up with each other. I tried sanding on the left one and got down to the original paint and can visualize the circle, but can not get a picture to show it. It just has a look to it. Here is a pic of the right dog leg with the pencil pointing to the area where it looks like the circle. The hood decals are the 'M-D Farmall Cub' ones. They are the only decals that are not completely covered with paint; looks like they painted them and then wiped them off. Oh well, no real proof. I might put the Circle Cub decals on after I get it painted anyway.

Original hood would not have had the word Cub on it.

In Raymond Durban's database, the last Cub there with the circle Cub decal was serial number 3555.
The first Cub without the circle Cub decal that is in the list is serial number 4308.
It says both Cubs had original decals.

There's a few Cubs in the list between the 2 serial numbers, but it doesn't say which decals they had.

At TM Tractor's decal listings it says the Circle Cub decal was used from May 1947 until July 28, 1947.

3555 was made in August 1947, the database says. :)
 
I have an update on #4028: today I sanded the layers of paint off the dog legs and this is what I found:

I also took a close look at the hood decals and can see "McC" under the decal showing on the top. It is just above the FAR like it should be. If you also look at the top of the decal you can see the original decal in the spot where the top one chipped off. Looks like they just put the newer decal on top of the original. Is there any way of removing the top decal without scratching off the original?

I can also see another decal, dealer I think, under the paint on the left side of the gas tank. I hope the letters will show up when I sand off the paint like the Circle Cub did.

they are factory decals, many of the aftermarket circle cubs were made all white and the wrong size, factory type were outlined in black, they measure 3" od, I reproduce decals for the cubs from originals, I have a nos circle decal so I use that to make new ones, here is a pic

I can’t help but think it’s a Circle Cub. Those decals had been on those dog legs for a very long time.
 
I would vote that you have a circle cub. Definitely Get the dog leg decals from TST the ones that come in the kit are horrible looking to me, he worked with me on getting them done up, and I was tickled with his work.

Consensus seems to be that you have reason to believe you have a Circle Cub. If you would, please make sure information is sent to Raymond Durban so the database is updated.

I have no doubt that they ran the circle until they ran out.That includes 1948
Mr. McCormick was a real stickler on IH stuff untill he was paid off. So the story

If you do the math for total production for ‘47 and figure it was for 8 months with 1355 per month, at the end of the third month July, the number would average out at 4067.
That puts yours right on the fence of receiving the new “Farmall cub” decals and possibly left over circle cub decals.
Anyone deep into auto restoration can tell you that decal placement was more often than not up to the assembly line worker than was an exact science. I doubt it was any different on the Farmall assembly line.
