2025 Garden season

Yes, we had to go to raised beds away from the creek that are 24" high because of the flooding...which happens twice a month now and gets scary sometimes. The high beds do make it easier for us old folks for picking tho! Although the pole beans get to where you almost need a stool

looks like -5 or so forecast here for us for the next couple of days! Hope they miss it! Wind and cold is our worst problem here --- well along with heat and lack of rain during growing season.
Strawberries look o.k. so far. Patch is between the house and greenhouse so they are somewhat protected.

0 F or -18 C...cold....real cold...Gobal warming...I don't think so...Real cold tonight....going to boil some water and take outside and throw in the air!!!! -10 F they say....should be fun!!!! Looking forward to a small garden this year...2026...1 acre again

Good to see the ol' fashioned winter slowly becoming history in Mid-Michigan. I can finally see the green clover again. And, the hard-neck garlic is standing at attention like little soldiers through the pine-straw mulch. Still months away from melon planting but hope springs eternal.

I made mention to a few friends I didn't know how pretty brown grass looked. For the last few years snow hasn't stayed on the ground for more than a few days and was gone.

Thursday I was inside on the 'puter looking up parts for a project tractor. It was 53º and they were calling for a chance of T-Storms. I heard a clap of thunder, then what sounded like a heavy downpour on the roof. Headed out to do the feeding and saw this. I picked up a piece and mashed it with my fingers, sure glad of that, it was large enough it could have done some damage, if it was normal hail.

I plan to get some onion and shallot seeds started in the next few days. For some reason onion sets I've purchased the last few years have not done well. Not my first rodeo, I've been planting them the same way for 30 some years but always did well before. It's been 5-6 years since I've started them from seeds, just easier to plant from starts for me.

Cabbage, peppers, brussels sprouts, and some buttercrunch lettuce will be started mid-March since they can take a cold spell and survive. Tomatoes & squash will be later mid-April to get well past the frost date with a target date to set out around Memorial Day. Forecasters are predicting a cool late Spring, so no used to get excited, they won't grow much until the ground gets up around 70º anyway.

Getting off to a meager start here with approx. 150 yellow sweet Spanish onions and 50+ Zebrune shallots in the germination chamber.

Apparently, the slow cooker and grow light still working after a couple years along with the digital grow mat thermostat, temp is up to 71º from 37º when I turned it on a while ago. With any luck they should be germinated by Sunday at noon.

Well since my procedure yesterday, it looks like I won't be on a tractor until April 22nd. Looks like I better hope for good weather the if I even want a late garden. I may not have time to manure it.

my plow days consist of me, myself, and I! ----probably could have goat roped Dusty into coming but I can only rake a bit at a time so I rake/burn for awhile then plow for a while.
got another acre done. sounds like rain on Friday,--maybe heavy so we see.
I could have used the 3 bottom plow but old cub gets up closer to the fence at the end and easier to turn around , also lighter and dont pack the ground down. now that I have the ground composted up good it plows decent. 8 to 10" now without any problem so I use the cub and old 3-pt 12" Brinley plow.
Still would like to get at least 1 of the high tunnels put up. Wind here has been a REAL problem lately so not sure on when to put one up. Dont really have time.
I wanted to mow off the farm again so the flowers and grasses can get off to a good start again like last year.
Onion plants are to arrive the week of the 24'th and seed potatoes wont be available til after April 1. I always try to get them in around the 10'th if possible.
A few early things could be planted now here.
Weeds are just starting to come up so its time to start planting! lol!

No real gardening around here yet. Some frost still in ground. Some patsnips and carrots still in ground but are starting to leaf out. Marigolds are up and pepper seeds are planted but not yet up. Heat mats and lights. Cut old asparagus fern a couple of days ago with cub and flail mower. Won't be long, weeds are starting to grow. Verrn
