Need help with my cub

No sir, we did not purchase the Zenith carb. The carb that was on there had the IH stamp on it. Checking the compression is next on the list to try. No, we haven't tried to pull start her yet.
I agree Stan. Rianna's carb looks like mine and I am 99% sure it's an IH.

FWIW I had my cub running with a new Chinese IH carb ( for first time in years) shut it down and could not get it started again. It has magneto ignition and I had gone through it. Ended up getting new internal coil for it and today started literally on 1st crank. The old coil still produced spark. Still not sure if it was the coil or not but it's running now with the new coil so possibly old coil was weak? I also bought a new condenser but it was wrong size for this cub carb and wouldn't fit. So used old condenser.

Would you explain where the internal coil is? Husband may know but he's sleeping so I can't ask him. We still haven't had time to pull start her. He did change out the condenser and put new spark plug wires on her. Seems like there was something else we ordered but can't pull it out of my brain right now. We decided to go ahead and replace things that we haven't replaced on her and she still wouldn't fire up. The next step is to try to pull start her and see if she will do anything. Just got to find time to do it.

The coil is inside the black enclosure that is on top of the magneto.

The pic is the black enclosure (cap) that Bill V made reference to. Remove the screws from the top as well as the high voltage wire from the cap and lift it straight ujp. It looks like the second picture. Stan

Hi,
It is common for the old original Cub magneto coils to quit.
Some of them work when cold, then quit after getting warm, in about 20 minutes of use, then work again when cold.
The magneto coil has a small wire that has to be disconnected to remove the coil.
You will need to remove the cover over the points to get to the wire, it connects to the post on the side of the magneto, where the end of the points spring is.
There is a rectangular bar through the center of the coil, if you buy a new coil, use the bar in the new coil.

I think if you both get comfortable with removing the magneto and then disassembling it (part way) and then putting it back in with the correct timing procedure then you will get it to start easily eventually. The reason I say that is you learn a lot each time. There are not that many parts. You named a couple of them. The condenser is right next to the points. Each has a wire connected to the same nut and there is a 3rd wire from the Internal coil in the room next door. lol. That is under the large black cover that Stan showed you a picture of. The coil wire goes through a foam cork that plugs up the tunnel leading to where the points and condenser are. That's the 3rd wire connected to the points and condenser. There is also the rotor and the distributor cap to consider. Each needs to be in decent shape and might need cleaning or replacing depending. It takes time but don't give up. I think that's key. You might need to buy a new coil, file the points and double check the gap. You can test the coil and the condenser using a multi meter but that only tells you so much. It's interesting though. You can look up how to do that.

The basics are the coil, condenser, points, rotor and distributor cap plus wires and spark plugs.
 
Thank you all for the latest advice! We replaced the coil a few years ago. Not too many hours on it. Do you think that we need to replace it now? If nothing happens or comes up, we're planning on trying to pull start her today. Fingers crossed she'll fire up and be ready to cut grass and get the deer field planted.

I would not replace the coil unless it fails to produce a spark when it's tested and I think you have already said that it is making a spark to ground. Good luck on the pull start attempt.

We're back at square one. The pull start didn't work. Dumb question but what color should the spark be again?

No hit- compression or spark delivery.
I was serious about that Honda teaching me a lesson. I laid all 4 plugs on the valve cover and they went sparky, sparky, sparky sparky. Hot and white just like you have. Car would not hit a lick. Bought the recommended coil…EXPENSIVE…first piston up hit.
It was on an engine I had just installed and I was loathe to pull it out😩

I'll get back later on for the answer to your question. I honestly can't remember what he said when he used the starting fluid other than she didn't start.

Seems like you need some in person help, you're missing something that maybe another set of eyes will catch.
 
Air cleaner oil fill level allowing oil to be inhaled?

Choke lever on backside of carb loose or slipped and choke position isn't what prior adjusting rod suggests it is and not enough air getting through?

A valve or two not seated that should be due to a gob of carbon or just a sticky valve?

Conking out under load puts a strain on what the most?
