Tractor cut off with battery disconnect
My 1948 (so I think) has been converted to 12 volt negative ground. The positive battery cable runs to the starter and coil. The coil connects to the push/pull switch. Once the tractor is cranked it can be cut off by disconnecting the positive cable. Should this happen or is my alternator not putting out?

Re: Tractor cut off with battery disconnect
Have you had any problems with your battery going dead? If you haven’t then something’s not wired right and it is charging.

Re: Tractor cut off with battery disconnect
Why are you disconnecting the battery cable with the engine running? the sudden loss of load can be hard on your alternator or it's internal regulator? The regulator inside the alternator should shut the output voltage down when you do that, but you take a risk of damaging the alternator or the internal regulator.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: Tractor cut off with battery disconnect
Another possibility is that the alternator is not charging and the tractor is running off the battery. They do fail.
Which alternator do you have? Photo would greatly help.
Since there have been a number of alternator styles/configurations used in the past 50 plus years, suggest picking up a single wire alternator. It should be a simple installation and wiring task. They are not that expensive.
Edit. There is a whole lot we don't know. There is a few changes that need to be made when converting from 6V to a 12V alternator. There are numerous posts on this site about converting to a 12V alternator. Use the search function, top right of this page.

Wiring mirrors the 12volt wiring shown on several diagrams on the net. Battery was disconnected by mistake or accident. Positive cable was not tightened and was accidentally pulled off by my foot and motor cut off. Not done on purpose but once it happened I was thinking the motor should have kept running using the output of the alternator.

OK. Which wiring diagram? There are two different wiring diagrams in common use today in USA manufactured vehicles.Brodalick wrote:Wiring mirrors the 12volt wiring shown on several diagrams on the net.
The igntion coil load should have been sufficient to keep the alternator working and the tractor running.Battery was disconnected by mistake or accident. I was thinking the motor should have kept running using the output of the alternator.
Back to, How about photos of the alternator from the side and back?

Re: Tractor cut off with battery disconnect
May not be wrong. The 3 wire alternators need to have some sort of switch, diode, lamp, in one of the wires connected to the back side of the alternator to start the alternator charging. If the alternator is not excited to start charging, then no charge and if you disconnect the battery, tractor dies.

Re: Tractor cut off with battery disconnect
I added pics. Sorry I added them at the start because I did not know what I was doing. The three white wires you see coning from the black tube, the middle one goes to the alternator and there is a red wire coming from the coil that goes there also. Think I will remove hood and have alternator checked. Best pics I could take with hood on.

Re: Tractor cut off with battery disconnect
I would remove the hood and then check the alternator's and tractor wiring. Making sure it's wired correctly.
If wired correctly, then remove and have tested.
My guess, Delco 10SI, but you will have to double check and find out.
If the tractor is wired correctly and it's a 3 wire alternator, there is a simple check to see if the alternator is faulty.

Here's a question: What does the ammeter read when the tractor is running?

Re: Tractor cut off with battery disconnect
Matt that's another issue. Gauge is broken. Tractor ran yesterday and today battery is dead. My guess is a faulty alternator. I have a friend that owns an electrical shop and can rebuild it it needed.

IF it's the alternator and it's a 10SI like Eugene said it'll probably be cheaper just to trade it at a local auto parts store than to rebuild it.

My friend charged me $20 for my last auto alternator. Will surely check first though

If the Delco 10SI and other 3 wire alternators are wired incorrectly, it will run down the battery over night.Brodalick wrote:Tractor ran yesterday and today battery is dead. My guess is a faulty alternator.
It's currently cheaper to purchase a rebuilt alternator, with warranty, than the repair parts.
I use to repair Chrysler alternators in the early 1960s.
