LoBoy 154 engine smoke

Postby seahaul » Wed Oct 28, 2015 10:00 am

I just obtained a 154 that puts out a big puff of blue smoke when you open the throttle wide open. Getting a little blow-by from the oil fill tube while running but don't see any smoke from the exhaust.
Checked the compression on all cylinders and they range 110-115 so it seems to have good compression.
Is it possible that it needs new rings or could there be another cause for the blue smoke?

Rings, cause of the blowby. The puff of blue smoke could also be caused by worn rings and perhaps the carburetor set a bit on the rich side.

Might try turning the idle adjusting screw on the carburetor out about 1/2 turn to see if that makes any difference.

Compression is very good, other than trying the idle air adjustment, I would leave the engine alone.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Run some Sea Foam through it! The compression is good so the rings are fine. These tractors typically run pretty rich, and the adjustment Eugene mentions above is good to try. These engines get carboned up pretty good from a lot of idling around and not being worked hard enough. The Sea Foam will help clean things up a bit, but you need to run a can in the gas and a can in the crank case (follow the directions on the can), then run her REALLY hard like plowing or mowing for 4-hours! If you really want to clean up the valves, on top of doing the above, pull the air intake tube off the carb and squirt Sea Foam in the intake while running at about 1/2 throttle. Spray in enough to make the engine cough and start to run poorly, but not enough to kill the engine. I'd do it for 3 or 4 minutes. She'll spew blue smoke but that's the carbon burning off.

After you've done these things, do a tune-up with new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc., and I'll bet she will run like a top!
