Doing away with sediment bowl ?
I am concerned that my intermittent fuel supply is as a result of the sediment bowl not allowing fuel through as it should. The bowl has been off a couple of times and the screen at the top of the bowl doesn't seem to sit well. I already have a in-line fuel filter in place and see that some members have done away with the sediment bowls and installed a simple ball valve for shutting off the fuel supply. Is this a reasonable thing to do?
Here is a photo of the set as it is currently.

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
I prefer to use the sediment bowl, if the fuel tank is cleaned and all screens are in place as original I do not have any problems. I have an 8n Ford that had the sediment bowl replaced with an inline filter and it was nothing but trouble . I cleaned the fuel tank and put it back to sediment bowl and soldered about a3/4 " tube to the stem of the bowl Assembly extending up into the tank . I have used the tractor for about 20 years with no fuel flow issues.
That is jus my experience/ opinion others may differ but it woks for me.

I went to a Harley Dealer in town and got a very nice inline filter and shut off valve. Cheaper than an after market sediment bowl and I have no fuel issues.

Oh and also some might comment that rubber lines are a fire hazard and to stick to the steel fuel lines. Good point, your choice

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
My OPINION is the only way the sediment bowl won't "allow fuel through as it should" is if the passageways are full of crud. Change to a filter only and the filter will be full of crud and you still won't have proper fuel flow. Doctor the ailment, not the symptoms.pfj wrote:I am concerned that my intermittent fuel supply is as a result of the sediment bowl not allowing fuel through as it should......
Is it the correct screen? Have you tried a new rubber gasket? (I only use a rubber gasket after the last cork one disentegrated in my hands a couple months after installing it when I took the bowl off)pfj wrote: The bowl has been off a couple of times and the screen at the top of the bowl doesn't seem to sit well.
My OPINION is filters have caused more problems than they have prevented.pfj wrote: I already have a in-line fuel filter in place ...........
If you feel you MUST HAVE a filter in place then try this method. You've got your filter and the "anti filter crowd" won't know

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
It's not rocket surgery. Fix the sediment bowl, get rid of the inline filter (that is probably stopped up) and you should be good. While you're at it clean the screen at the carb too.

I've used this method for several years, on several Cubs (mine and others) and have not had the first issue with fuel flow.

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
I replaced the sediment bowl on my Cub and another tractor with a ball valve and a gravity flow fuel filter. Used neoprene fuel line. No problems.
Possible fire hazard? Ball valve positive fuel shut off, no fuel weeping past the bowl gasket or the shut off valve packing.

I have an excuse. CRS.

My experience has been that rubber will swell after exposed to gasolene. Much better service with Nitrile gasket, available at a good parts store. Stan

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
Someone must have TORQUED HARD the nut which might have warped the top part of the bowl. Remove the sediment bowl from the tank and check the top part for straightness. Second when you do put the new rubber gasket on make sure all surfaces are completely dry when installing and it only needs to be finger tight. No Tools!

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
I find the sediment bowl helps as a water separator. After dealing with water in diesel fuel and all the trouble to flush the lines out, I have newfound respect on sediment bowls.

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
I've had tractors set up both ways. As long as you use a bit of common sense with running the rubber line, and use a filter for gravity flow , wix 33002 or 33003, a ball valve is a good alternative to a sediment bowl. Especially if it's in a hard to reach place, like my old 2404 with a loader.
My 140 has the sediment bowl, and a gravity flow filter, best of both worlds.
I infuriate correct police for fun, so that's not a bother to me.

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
The Bowl was put there to take care of water and trash. It is a bad idea in my opinion to remove it, I have no problems with the bowl with just regular maintenance about every 2 or 3 years maybe. A bad tank will not be helped with replacing the bowl with something else.

Re: Doing away with sediment bowl ?
This months Red Power magazine has a great article on sediment bowls--it also states and shows a photo of the sediment bowl removed and replaced with a ball valve " a good alternative for a working tractor"
I agree with this opinion I replace my sediment bowls when they start to leak, just a simple 3/8 brass ball valve to an in line filter I also use the high heat covering from the local hydraulic shop over top of the rubber hose to protect it from the heat and rubbing.
To each his own, but for me I'll take a ball valve and inline filter but if I had one that was a show tractor I would want it original
