Re: Carb straightening jig and Cubarama
Well I got back and set the carb on the shelf and haven't picked up a new gasket for it yet. But thought everybody may like to see what it was we started with. I'll do a follow up when I get it back on the tractor.
Many thanks to Barnyard for doing this. It was a source of entertainment, wise cracks, and fun for most of the day. Some were even about the Carb! -

Man, I almost forgot what that thing looked like when we started. I wish we could have gotten the one end flat. I did get a kick out of the comment from one un-named person who said, "I have never seen a bottom warped like that."
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Hey Scrivet, do you happen to have any pix of the carb after we worked on it.

Re: Carb straightening jig and Cubarama
Plan on taking some when I get around to putting the new gasket in I picked up this past Saturday. I'm having to recover awhile from sticker shock before I can work on it. I had to pay $1.50 for a carb gasket! That's like SIX whole quarters!!!!!!!!

Holy Cow... I used to get a haircut, a Barq's root beer AND a Clark Bar for that kind of money.

Re: Carb straightening jig and Cubarama
Tried the new gasket today. Started with the screws finger snugged, then 1/4 turn, then another 1/4 turn. The section by the inlet is still loose, I can wiggle the gasket with my finger. I'm thinking something like a saddle to fit over the hump when clamping it on the jig to get a better grip. The hump is 1/2" wide and 5/16" high so maybe grinding off one side of a 1/2" nut? Here's the pictures.

Re: Carb straightening jig and Cubarama
Scrivet, If you still have access to the flattening jig, you can use a c-clamp over the gas inlet. The curvature makes it a little hard to tighten the clamp though. Rick Prentice came up with a secondary jig which functions like what you describe. It's a piece of one inch square stock that is drilled to fit the two diameters of the inlet and then sectioned to fit flat on the sides of the inlet.

Re: Carb straightening jig and Cubarama
Scrivet, remove the gasket and put a washer between the halves where each screw goes through and just snug the screws a little, then use your big vice or mine to carefully bring that corner in till it is straight. I have done that on a couple of them, and surprisingly was successful.

Re: Carb straightening jig and Cubarama
OK sounds like a workable idea. That picture was taken on the back of Frenchy and there's a big vise on the other corner. Can I use that instead of your big vice?

Good thing you two have known each other for years. I would like to be around to see you two together. Might even want to throw Rabbit Holler Flash into the mix. I'm sure it would be a hoot.

They were both at Cubarama, but they were seldom seen together.
