Model 70 electric problems
My model 70 died. I turned it off to get off of it and it want start back. When I push the start button I get nothing. No noise or anything. Battery is new and cables are good and tight. It has a new plug, coil, condenser. Points are good. It's like there is no battery. I can raise the hood sit on the mower lean over hit the button and see the generator try to turn to the right(clock wise) and It makes a pecking noise when it does. What's going on with this crazy thing?

Re: Model 70 electric problems
Puit some jumper cables on it and try it. Also check the solinoid connections and starter/generator connections. If it starts with the jumper cables charge the battery and once running check to see if it is charging. Also make sure the battery connections are clean and tight.
PS: If none of this helps check to see if you are getting power from the switch to the solinoid (small wire at solinoid). If there is power there you can try jumping across the two larger wires on the solinoid to get power directly to the starter/generator.

Re: Model 70 electric problems
Sounds like a bad connection. Multi meter or test lite and check voltage at starter.

Solenoid clicking. Problem is related to battery condition, poor or corroded connections.Slickwilly1976 wrote:I can see the generator try to turn to the right(clock wise) and It makes a pecking noise when it does.

Re: Model 70 electric problems
I tried all the connections and nothing. I can tape on the starter/gen. And it will turn a quarter round then it will hum.

Re: Model 70 electric problems
If I'm standing in front of the mower looking down at the generator I can turn the pulley to the right 4or5 rounds and them hit the switch and it turns the other way and starts.

Re: Model 70 electric problems
Start out by having the battery load tested at auto parts store. New battery doesn't mean much, specially for the small batteries for garden tractors or lawn mowers.

70 Cub Cadets do not have a solenoid if is the factory wiring.
Here is a copy of the factory wire harness that I found in ihcubcadet.com:

While the do somewhat the same thing they are not the same thing.
Makes it much easier to help someone trouble shoot a problem if you call the parts by the correct name.

Good call. Much better to use a generic name than a part specific that typically makes a clicking sound with low battery voltage or poor physical connection.Merk wrote:Makes it much easier to help someone trouble shoot a problem if you call the parts by the correct name.

Re: Model 70 electric problems
Well I believe it's the generator. When it locks up it will only turn one way. When you hit the switch I found out the clicking noise is the pulley trying to turn and it will only turn about a 1/4 inch and it makes a tapping sound. I can turn it the other way by hand several times then I can hit the switch and the generator will turn the way it's supposed to and it runs. What would be inside the generator causing it to lock and not turn the way it's supposed to?

Re: Model 70 electric problems
Have you checked out the battery condition and cleaned the connections?
If so, then it's time to disassemble the S/G. Guessing the commutator needs to be cleaned up and new brushes installed. I would put in a new bearing and bushing during the repair.
