Norm Degraff's Battery Boxes
Howdy All! After recent discussion of battery boxes, I decided to take a chance and bought one of Norm Quay's* battery boxes. The original box on the '51 was corroded and missing the top. Before I found FarmallCub.com, I had bought a battery box on eBay that was supposed to be "just like OEM". Well... Let me say it was a $50 lesson that one needs the information and advice found on this forum before wasting money on junk.
I got the Norm Box and was very impressed. It is built very nicely and very stout. Here is a picture of the inside of the Norm Box.
As you can see the metal forming on the bottom is first rate. And all the stock holes and punchouts are there as well.
Here is a picture of the assembled box with dimensions of the metal. Believe me, this thing is stout!
The corners are formed nicely, the rear light mounting bracket is substantial as are the hold-down ears. He is no longer sending these units out painted red. It seems that his powder coater was not consistent when it came to replicating Cub Red. So when you get your battery box from Norm, it will be in primer as shown. But primer is fine with me since the '51 is Maroon rather than Cub Red.
As soon as I can find the brochure that Norm sent along with the box, I will post his new email address. Speaking of lessons, this box cost $90 ($102 with shipping to Texas), but it is well worth it to me. The piece of eBay junk was an embarrassment and would have irritated me every time I saw it in my tractor.
BTW He was a very nice guy to deal with. So if all you need is a top or front, you might talk to him about getting just those pieces.

I meet Norm a couple of years ago at the TriState Gas Engine Show one heck of a guy. He was at the cubfest last year. Nice guy to talk too.
Would buy anything he makes.
I think he's like Rick or is Rick like him.
Keep up the GREAT work.

At 0.062 thick, the steel is 16 gage. And one box component from OEM that I measured was 16 gage. Originals were 14 gage. Shearing and bending 14 gage requires considerably heavier equipment than does 16 gage. 14 gage is about 0.075- 0.079 unpainted. All the components that I have made are from 16 gage. Considering that most of the originals had no preventive care at all and many are more than 50 years old, 16 gage will do well for a long time on a carefully maintained machine. I patched a battery box for a 140 that had some holes rusted through. Cut with portable jigsaw back to good edge around the holes, cut 16 gage patch to fit the hole, clamped patch flush with exterior of the box, welded first pass with MIG from the inside, then from the outside. Grind flush, hammer and dolly flat, prime, spot/glazing putty, sand, prime again. Invisible from the outside.
Luck favors those who are prepared

I have an OEM box. I would say that the OEM box is not quite as nice as Norm's. Same money, but Norm's lid looks nicer. If OEM was not 40 minutes from me and I couldn't buy the OEM box on eBay for around $65, I would buy one of Norm's for my next Cub.
