Installing wheel weights

Postby George Willer » Thu Feb 16, 2006 10:39 am

I was alone yesterday and it was fairly warm, so I decided to install Scotty's weights. I had modified the hook I used last time to lift a set by the center hole by replacing the bottom bar with a 1/2" rod so I could lift by a bolt hole. It was a vast improvement!!! Anyone with a rolling hoist may want to spend a few minutes making a similar hook. By parking the tractor so a hole is at the top it was duck soup even for a geezer. The bar is long enough to enter the top hole and the holes are automatically lined up.

Image

You'll note how nicely the weight is hanging and ready for the hoist to be rolled in.

Done, without a scratch! The front weights will go on today.

GW,

That's a mighty handsome looking Cub.

I like that idea, suppose someone could do the same thing with a block and tackle right in the shop.

I gotta find a set of front and rear weights for my Loboy. Also could use a set of those nice looking tires.

Definately a good tool to have for working with weights!! With a careful operator, a trick like that could work from the end of a 3 pt. boom or a front end loader bucket as well.

Nicely done!

Postby allenlook » Thu Feb 16, 2006 3:26 pm

That sure beats humping them up on the wheel by yourself and trying to get the bolts into the holes with your teeth :) Don't ask.

By the way, I sure hope you put big felt washers on the back of those wheel weights so you don't scratch up those beautiful wheels!

Nice George!

I looked at the photos earlier today and it motivated me to take the weights off mine so I can blast em and paint em. Turned out to be an easier job than I expected. Managed to land them on a small pallet without even touching each other!

Even motivated me to paint the final drives and the shifter stuff too. Of course, the nice weather gave me a reason to work outside today too.

Do I need to go to Ohio to get the weights back on??

I just noticed the split type foam pipe insulation to prevent maring the paint. Don't know how I missed that the first time.

I know it's natural and correct to slap those wheel weights on but the paint on those wheel centers looks darn good. OuCh!

Weights

Postby allenlook » Fri Feb 17, 2006 8:23 am

Being a drummer, I always store my cymbals in a "cymbal vault", which is a round carrying case. Cymbals cost up to $300 each, so they are a major investment when you have 8 or 9 of them in one case. Each one has a big round felt pad between it and its neighbor, and that's all I could think of when I saw that wheel weight hanging in front of that pretty wheel, was OMG where is the felt pad!
