Fire Extinguisher "SHAKE-UP"!

Postby Dale Finch » Mon Sep 06, 2021 9:43 am

It was posted on here a while back that dry chemical fire extinguishers should be shaken up periodically to loosen the powder and keep it from packing down. So, I figured it was time for me to shake up the various fire extinguishers we have here at the farm.

This smaller one is pretty easy...

But the larger one is going to take a bit more oomph!!

And for those who are unaware, there was a huge recall of the small, plastic handled/nozzled extinguishers (sold under several brand names). Check online for the procedures to determine if you have a recalled ext., and how to get your free new one.

As a Fire Marshal, this is great advice. An extinguisher that has been mounted to equipment can also end up with compacted powder in the bottom. Shake them until you can feel the powder freely flowing. Sometimes it might need a couple smacks with a rubber mallet. Also routinely check pressure gauges and know where your extinguishers are and how to use them.
Remember the acronym PASS- PULL the pin, AIM at the base of the fire. SQUEEZE the handle, SWEEP side to side.

Thank you for the education! I had no idea that they needed to be shaken up on occasion. I have a fire extinguisher anywhere I have an antique tractor.
