starter upgrade
Does anyone know if i can use a starter from an early cub on my cub loboy 154. I realize i would need to install a flywheel ring gear to do this modification. The plate that covers the block looks like the bolt pattern would accept the earlier starter. Thanks so much in advance for any help you can provide.

Re: starter upgrade
The starter will physically bolt up but you may have to modify the frame rail for clearance.

Re: starter upgrade
also is there some block casting piece you have to grind off? --- around the water outlet, maybe?
looking at one of mine. Just had s/g unit rebuilt at $200 and it still wont work! the only thing stopping me from going the REAL starter route is the lack of the ring gear not being on the flywheel.

Re: starter upgrade
Thanks for the answers. I believe there is a starter ring gear available for the flywheel if it has the machined surface that will accept the ring gear. Mine has the flywheel that will accept the ring gear. I just needed to know that the standard starter will mount to the block. I would prefer to use a 6 volt starter as it will spin the engine over much faster. Thanks again.

Re: starter upgrade
The 154 is a 12v machine. Seems like you would want a 12v starter. The 12v starter from the 184 spins the motor around just fine and is most likely to fit in the frame rail. You can probably use the same solenoid with the 184 starter.

Re: starter upgrade
The 6 volt starter is considerably smaller in diameter, meaning it will be much easier to work into the space available. You would probably want to have the contact nub changed over to the threaded stud, like is on the 12 volt starter.

Would it be possible to solder a bolt to the nub on the 6 volt starter?

Re: starter upgrade
It might be possible but probably not very robust. I’d have a starter/generator shop replace it.

Re: starter upgrade
The biggest problem I noticed on the 154 is the ground cable not grounding properly.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
