Coolant leaking out of bottom bell housing hole

Hi we have a 65 internation cub c60 I'm trying to figure out my coolant problem it's leaking out of the hole in the bottom of the bell housing.upon reading some forums I saw some other guys have had freeze plug problems, upon splitting the tractor,no frost plugs? So it looks like the only place it could leak is the rear main? But it would have to be a blown head gasket to cause that I assume? Not sure drained the oil and it's all oil has anyone had this problem or anyone have any pointers

Hi,
A Cub engine has no freeze plugs.
I don't know how coolant would get in the clutch housing. It looks like if it came out the rear of the head, it would just run down the outside of the castings.

Head gasket leaks happen on Cub engines, check it closely for leaks.

Thanks for the reply, yea I found out there were no frost plugs, after splitting it. And yea we are pretty stumped and leaning towards the head gasket
I did drain the oil pan and it's Still good clean oil so that made me second guess the head gasket

Another symptom the tractor had,just thought off adding this, when running at high speed it would burn clean and when hot and lowering the idle it would some puff white smoke

Head bolt threads need sealed when installed too.
Part of sealing as much as a gasket.
Leaking would be from a different spot than head gasket edges.
Leaks can "track". Making diagnosis important.

Yes. The piston compression rings could/would contain coolant leaking into the combustion chamber.

The guys have discussed the possible causes for the coolant leakage. The white smoke is an indication that some, a small bit of coolant is leaking into a combustion chamber.

Hi,
If you remove the head, the head bolt threads need sealer put on them, they go into the engine water jacket.
Some of the people on here spray the new head gasket with sealer also.

The head bolts should be re torqued after the engine has been used, and has warmed up fully, and cooled down several times. Re torque them when the engine is cold.

Below is the Cub and LoBoy service manual. The engine is in section 1. It would be helpful to read it before working on it. It has the torque specs, and head bolt torque sequence.

Ask for a head gasket for an IH C60 engine.

Hi,
Glad to help.
If you remove the head, you should replace the upper radiator hose, if it is old. It is a straight piece of hose.

It is easier to remove the upper water elbow first, to get the head off the engine. If the 2 bolts won't come out, you could leave it in place.
Be careful to not break the radiator tube, if the hose is stuck on it, carefully run a small screwdriver in the end of the hose, between the hose and the tube, to loosen it from the tube. Don't pry on the tube, it can bend.

Below is a new elbow gasket, it looks like this one. You can make one if you want. I would put sealer on it also.

New hose clamps are good to put on it, if needed. When putting it together, try to turn the ends of the clamps for the screwdriver so you can get to them with the hood on, so they can be retightened. The hoses need retightening after some use.
I reach up under the hood from the left side, using a light, and tighten them. A short screwdriver works.
If the clamps will use a wrench, that works too.

As you have decided, most likely a head gasket, but I had one with a hairline crack across the back of the block, that was completely hidden behind the flywheel. If all else fails, puff a little corn starch or talcum powderon the back of the block and look for the trails. tip from eugene.
