My generator doesn’t seem to be charging. I’ve had it tested along with the voltage reg and it supposedly is working fine. But not for me.
1). I have power at both post on the ampmeter.
2). When I turn the key switch on ampmeter shows discharge.
3). When trying to polarize the generator (battery to generator at the regulator post) I get no spark.
4). So I tested voltage at the regulator. Both the battery and generator terminals show 12 volts.
SHOULD BOTH TERMINALS SHOW 12 VOLTS???
I have a new Brillman wiring harness and is wired per their instructions.
Thanks in advance.

Re: 1975 Cub Generator
An added note, I’ve been theough the trouble shooting flow chart and it appears that the generator isn’t charging. Not good

Re: 1975 Cub Generator
The only time both the Bat and Gen terminals of the regulator should read the same is when the engine is running and charging. But then it should be around 13.5 volts. My thoughts are incorrect wiring, or bad generator/ regulator. Hard to tell more than that without being hands on. If you want to bring it up, it will only take about 5 hours each way as a quick estimate. Better bring/buy some long handle underwear though, we are running high temps around 30 degrees.

Re: 1975 Cub Generator
What’s weird John is the generator was checked out and showed to be working. I’m not sure I’ve got it polarized. I disconnected the wires to gen and put a jumper on the two generator post. Cranked the tractor, I don’t get a constant voltage reading. But I think the generator has to be polarized to generate power.
If I had a covered trailer I’d be on the road headed your way right now. As far as I know this is all that’s needed to complete the little tractor. You gotta love it

Re: 1975 Cub Generator
Check all of your grounds. With that new paint it could be the problem. Run it at high throttle to make sure it is kicking in. You said you ran the troubleshooter, but I would do it again. Non polarizing shouldn't be the reason it isn't charging. That just makes sure the polarity (+-) of the current is in the correct direction.

Re: 1975 Cub Generator
I believe he took the generator back to the shop and they found a stuck brush that was overlooked the first time.

Re: 1975 Cub Generator
Yep, John and I got on the phone one night and went through a series of dobyou have fire here, is that grounded.... etc and John said you Generator is bad. So I took the generator back to the folks that “FIXED IT”. It took about 15 minutes to find the problem, a vacation day, four hours of driving and forty dollars in gas. Could have been worse for sure. Like John said, there was a stuck brush. The brush actually arced to the brush holder, some how, this not allowing the brush to make good contact with the armature. Anyway, thanks to John, Bob, Buddy, Chris, Chase and Mr. Larry ( and several others) for all their knowledge, support and parts. Hope to see you guys at a fest or two

Glad you shared so we all think to look for stuff like that when it doesn't make sense.
