Sleeved brake drum
Hello, I am new to posting on the forum but have been reading / studying them for a long time. I am starting to work on our Cub and removed the Right Final Drive to replace the brake lining and replace the seals. After studying the many helpful posts, I thought I knew what I was getting into. The first surprise I encountered was removing the brake drum. Mine did not come off after a few blows of a hammer as I was expecting. I had to press it off. When I started to clean up the drum I found out why. Someone has been here before. There is a sleeve in the drum. The keyhole slot does not line up with the set screw. Other than the woodruff key, the drum is held in place by the press fit. Looks like when this was last assembled it took some effort to seat since the edges of the sleeve are rounded over. I am leaning towards replacing the drum, but I want to make sure the shaft has not been turned down, hence the need for a sleeve. Does anyone have a shaft they can measure where the drum sits so I can compare to mine?
I have pictures to post, but I assume I need to meet a minimum number of posts first? I don't seem to see the buttons that are shown in the how to post pictures thread.
Thank you,

Looks like I can upload the pictures. Interesting find and looks like some well done machine work. Anyone else find a sleeved brake drum? Not sure if I should reuse and press back on or replace with non-sleeved part.

Shaft measures 1.5 inches, where the drum mounts. I don't see any reason why you can't reuse that drum. Stays tight on the shaft, and the braking surface looks smooth.

Re: Sleeved brake drum
I’m sure that one of the reasons it was so difficult to remove was the battering that the casting and sleeve received when it was installed. I’d clean up the flares and do a little sanding or ball honing on the ID to make it easier to reinstall.

Welcome to the Forum! Agree with Don, clean it up and reuse.
Take some time and read through a few threads you may not have read on the Forum:
Don't know if you have any of the manuals to your Cub, but now that you have your 2nd post, you'll have access to the all the PDF Manuals on this site. There’s a few ways to do that:
You'll be able to download an Owner's Manual (very strongly recommended) and any service manuals that interest you. Implement Manuals are also available.
We’d encourage you to take the Safety Test located in the Safety Forum: http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=68084
Might also enjoy reading through this thread: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
Take some pictures of your tractor and post them, we’d like to see it.
Remember:
• When you have a specific question, start a new thread in the appropriate sub-forum.
• Before posting, use the Preview button before hitting Submit--it'll show you exactly what your post will look like, including pictures.
• When adding your comments to a thread, be sure to look at the date of the last poster. If it’s more than a 6 months old, the posters are probably not going to see it. Consider starting a new thread.

- From a desktop or laptop, go to "Quick Links" in the upper left corner of your screen. Hit that and a pull-down appears where you'll find "PDF Manuals".

Re: Sleeved brake drum
Thank you for the welcome. With two daughters (5 and 8 ) and wife recovering from rotator cuff surgery, there is never a dull moment. I don't get much time in the shop but I convinced the wife if we want our daughters to get interested mechanical things and engineering, now is the time to get the oldest exposed and interested.
I am leaning towards reusing the brake drum. When I find farmer fixes or add-ons that are done well, I like to preserve them. My little way of preserving a small piece of history and how things were done.

Re: Sleeved brake drum
Welcome! That really is an interesting fix!
It's also great that you and your wife are encouraging your daughters to stretch their interests. My father (a doctor) had 4 daughters (poor thing! ), and each of us ended up in non-traditional roles for women: oldest a vet, next an architect, then me, an electrical engineer/turned pilot, and the youngest a police sergeant! We are all retired now, but definitely had interesting lives. My high school graduation presents from my mother were a sewing machine and a complete set of Craftsmen tools!!
My suggestion, buy each daughter their own set of nice tools (tagging them with paint colors or tape for each), and give each a small project on the tractor to complete...simple tasks at first, then...
Get them some disposable gloves, though, because they may be deterred by the gunk that gets under the nails!! After all, they ARE still little ladies!

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Sleeved brake drum
Having been raised by a father/farmer from the 20's and depression era. I know all about owner fixes and modifications. With my Cub, that's been in the family for 60 yrs, if something broke and you didn't have the money or resources to fix it to "factory specs", you did what was necessary to get it back into service. That went for the tractor and equipment.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over.

Re: Sleeved brake drum
Hi,
Remember that without the setscrew tightening on the key, there is nothing to hold the drum in the right position, except how tight it is on the shaft.
If the drum moves to the side, it won't contact the brake lining, and the brake won't work.
Dale Finch made a post showing a brake repair where the drum had come loose, and moved to the side.
Below is the post.
viewtopic.php?f=142&t=78436
The drum you have may work, if it is tight enough on the shaft.
I can't tell how tight it is without being there.
TM Tractor at the bottom of the page has new brake drums, if you need one.

I would NOT reuse that drum! The last good used one that I bought cost me all of $25, why mess with one that isn't right.

Re: Sleeved brake drum
On one hand that drum won't come loose... That's the closest thing that comes to a true "shortcoming" on these tractors. That set screw backs out, the drum works sideways, key falls out, and you've got no more brakes... BTDT.
On the other hand that bore doesn't look round, the sleeve looks bashed... It will be a fight to get it back on and another fight to get it off the next time.
As others have said, good used drums are cheap and plentiful. I would recommend a "new" (i.e. good used) drum.
