Constructing “New” Side Dresser
I’m having a hard time finding a seeder or side dresser. I am thinking about trying to make one out of parts. It seems like a lot of the parts are available online. Is it worth the effort? Cost effective?

Re: Constructing “New” Side Dresser
If you are trying to piece one together you will probably spend twice what you can find a complete one for.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

A NICE Planter and Sidedresser in Good condition will fetch around 1000. What peices you have and what do you need. I have pbly 10 complete Planters and Sidedresser, and a BOAT LOAD of parts for them.

Determine exactly what you want and put a wanted ad in The Vine. They are out there, but they are expensive and you may have to travel a bit to get one or try the Cub Express.

You are correct---and I can >not< understand why, other than the coolness factor.

Re: Constructing “New” Side Dresser
Is there a particular model you want?
Is it to use or for show?
If it is to use, please tell us what it is you want to plant!
How much would you be using it? A few rows? 1/2 acre? 10 acres?

Re: Constructing “New” Side Dresser
They are out there you just have to keep looking. The hoppers are the hardest part to find. Especially planter hoppers like the richmond or combination hoppers which use fairly common IH planter plates. Agri-supply sells a new aftermarket fertilizer hopper that will work just fine. I’ve just finished putting a complete 174 planter with combination seed hopper and original galvanized fertilizer hopper together and I have less than 300 dollars in all of it. I found most all of it poking around at farm sales and on Craigslist. I’ve never crossed paths with a complete set up for sale but have no trouble finding bits and pieces. Study the parts manuals diligently so you know what all the parts look like and then when you find parts you will quickly recognize them and know what is and isn’t there. It took me about two years to put a complete unit together and I have almost enough parts to put a second unit together. And no I’m not interested in selling any parts as I use mine in a commercial garden and need to have parts on hand if and when something breaks. The cheapest way to buy a complete setup is to find it on a cub and buy the tractor too.
