Re: One wire alternator
Auto parts store, my first choice. 1 year warranty, no hassle returns, any alternator as a core.
Other folks have purchased from DB Electrical.

Re: One wire alternator
The mini-Denso, that Don linked to, is a really nice little unit. It is well suited to a small tractor, both in physical size and amperage output. Also, many have reported that they were able to use existing brackets, without modification. I've installed several of them and very happy with them. It seems that D B Electrical keeps increasing the price, though, they can be found, from many E-bay sources, considerably cheaper.

Re: One wire alternator
I used the existing bracket.
I used the stock generator mount drilled out to accept 3/8" threaded rod. The slotted adjustment bracket just required a bit of massaging with a 3lb hand sledge to straighten it out a bit (but not completely flat) and it lined right up. I did grind just a bit of metal off the bottom edge of the bracket where it touched the alternator. I probably could have skipped that but why take a chance.
I tightened the nuts in the following order.
Thread on the rear nut until it's flush with the end of the threaded rod.
Tighten the front nut to tighten the alternator.
Tighten the one directly under the alternator.
Tighten the 4th nut last.
I also used 2 flat washers between the alternator and the bracket to space it out to fine tune lining up the belt. Not real pretty but functional.

Re: One wire alternator
i was looking at radioguy41's picture what are the wires connected to the oil pressure guage? i just bought it looks to be the same alternator from brillman, and where that wire connects from the guage to the alternator has been plugged up.

Some sort of pressure switch to excite the alternator as soon as the engine starts up, I would bet. These engines don’t spin fast enough to excite many of the self-exciting alternators, so many make a manual switch to apply momentary power to the alternator to start it charging. There are other options for doing this involving resistors or lightbulbs.
If you just hard-wire power to the alternator, it will drain the battery quickly when not running, hence the need for a switch or resistance of some kind.

Re: One wire alternator
Hey ScottyD'sdad, do u know if the db alternators will work the same spun in either direction? I want to replace the alternator on my 50 year old boat, but after many calls and an email, I have no response from DB. When looking at the front of the engine, the alternator is spinning counter clockwise. Thx

Re: One wire alternator
I went with a 105amp one wire kit for the 10si alternator from eBay I believe JC Whitney offers it too. There are different kits.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

I don't believe that ANY alternator cares which way it spins. This is not true of generators where the brushes need to be located based on the direction of rotation.
