I know we all are playing with "old technology" when it comes to these tractors, and I know we all lament the loss of anyone in hardware and auto parts stores who know their products, but REALLY??! Today I went to THREE different auto parts stores plus Lowe's Hardware just to buy one ignition points file! First, they didn't know what it was, then when I Googled it and showed them a picture, they said no, they didn't have it but could order one for me. I finally conceded defeat and had NAPA order it from their warehouse to be picked up tomorrow.
Ah, why did good ole Joe at the old hardware store close....?

Around here, a Sears is harder to find, than a point file. Another one is closing!

Re: You want what?
Last time I went to Sears (my choice for decades!), the tool department seemed to be run by the adjacent linens and housewares department! All the older, knowledgable gentlemen who knew tools were gone! I was planning to buy a portable air compressor, but they had very few to show me...said they now sold too much online. So I guess along with the convenience of on line shopping, we lose the ability to see and touch our tools before we buy them.
I read a VW repair manual in college that said "buy tools you like to touch". Even though that was in the late 60's and was written by a hippy, that ALWAYS guided me in the purchases of tools, because he was right! Of course, if I could afford it, the majority of my tools would be Snap On!!
PS I have been known to chase the tool trucks that came to the shop I worked in, just as I used to chase the ice cream trucks of childhood!!!

Used that SAME manual to rebuild 6 VWs, guy knew what he was doing and had a sense of humor to boot! What I really liked was his lack of use of "specialty" tools, just the standard "metric" hand tools.

Re: You want what?
Wouldn't it be great if someone actually wrote a new Cub Service Manual with all the How To's used as a base!
Title: HOW TO KEEP YOUR CUB ALIVE: A MANUAL OF STEP BY STEP PROCEDURES FOR THE COMPLETE IDIOT
https://www.amazon.com/Keep-Volkswagen-Alive-Step-Step/dp/1566913101
We could do one chapter at each cubfest! Come on...anyone?!
This manual changed my life! After college graduation, I traveled around the US in my VW Bus, a set of Craftsman tools, this manual...and a spare engine!! Yep! Pulled into a gas station in Woodstock, New York, and asked "may I borrow your floor jack?" He was shocked when I informed him I needed it to change my ENGINE!

Re: You want what?
I guess I am lucky that I live where there is still a lot of the old machinery in use. Our local NAPA stocks point files, as well as understanding what I am tlaking about when I am looking for a part or tool.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I have that VW manual, probably the best how to book I ever read! VW for idiots if I remember correctly. It's packed away some where.
I recently went to Sears for a set of suspension "pickle forks" for my air hammer. Asking the sales"kid" as where they'd be he snapped back we don't have them. I asked where they'd be if they had them and he repeated they don't have them. His manager over heard and told him to take me to the automotive tool aisle and help me look. The kid had his phone in hand which he never lifted his eyes from. He went into the aisle turned and said see, don't have them. Never looked away from the damn phone.
I blew up. Called him on his burying his nose in his phone and asked if he even knew what we were looking for?
He answered,"not a clue".
Wow.
I told him I've got a better shot finding it on my own. Ok, turned out it wasn't in the automotive tool aisle. So I reasoned , if I was a kid who didn't know or care what he was holding where might I set that tool out?
Looks like a wood chisel, and that's where I found six of them, in with the carpentry tools.
The manager was at the register when I brought it over. He knew the BS I had just gone through and actually knocked 10% off for me without asking. That helped my mood a little but the example was set showing the sign of the times.
Shouldn't be that hard to excel these days.
An honest effort, like that common to our fathers should make you stand out and get promoted to the top!

Re: You want what?
You know now that I'm thinking about it again I think I'm going to dig that VW manual back out and re-read it. The only manual that I think can be enjoyed like a good book.

Re: You want what?
I laughed so hard while using that manual! If you do find it, check out the section on what to do if the oil light comes on, and keep in mind I was driving a VW BUS!!!
For those who haven't seen this book, it was SO practical that in the section about removing the engine, it even suggested having a pencil with you to plug the fuel line, otherwise you would have gas running down your arms to your armpits!

Interesting, I drove a '57 VW Bus (window van), 36HP, 50MPH top speed--"Hippie Bus" if you will, during college. Head and crosswinds, along with passing semi's would blow you all over the highway. AND if in an accident, you were the first one there!

Re: You want what?
Well since this is thread is totally derailed… in the mid 70’s my dad bought two convertibles from a lady at work; ’65 Mustang and a ‘63 VW Bug! (I think for around $500!) I was pre-driver’s license then but I helped my dad piddle with them and hope of putting my name on one when I did get my license. Working on the Bug was a blast, I believe we also had that book, my mom purchased several references; Chilton of course and something like VW Repair For Idiots, think we used the later most! I must have retained some of that knowledge as I moved into VW powered Mud Buggies and Sand Rails in my later teen years. He sold the VW several years later but kept the Mustang, which stayed in the family until a few years ago. I miss the VW and have hopes of getting one someday….
Good memories,
Good memories,
David
