10 lb propane tank won't fill

Postby Bob McCarty » Tue Aug 30, 2022 6:13 pm

I took it to the propane place where I've gone for years. He couldn't get the tank to fill and said it would need a new valve. Another 10 pounder with a new valve had the same problem. He replaced my valve and it still wouldn't fill. I'm guessing there was a bad batch of valves. He'll order some more. Any other suggestions or ideas?

Little screw on the side of the valve. Unscrew it some and see if that solves the problem. The old fashion way to fill them up without a scale was to unscrew that screw some and when tank filled, propane would come out that hole

He did that without success in filling it. Went to another hose/tank that had higher pressure also without success.

The OPD valves have a very small orifice for filling. It can’t be much else but the valve.

It sounds like it has lost its vacuum. When a tank is new, the tank is evacuated prior to the first fill. Sometimes, when a propane tank runs out of fuel, the gas valve is not turned off right away and the tank will need to be evacuated again.

The hint to this is when a tank only takes a partial fill. Maybe this is the issue???? If it were a 20lb tank, I'd exchange it. Not sure what to do with a 10lb tank.

Your opd valve has a float attached to it that might be stuck.

OPD valves are a pain in the butt, even if they are perfect. Probably a mis-made valve..

I have a Wet leg on my bulk tank and fill my own tanks. A while back I had one of the exchange company tanks that would not take gas at all.
Seemed to look, and it worked well enough to empty the tank while being used on a BBQ grill.
I messed with it quite a while, but it would not fill.
It was my neighbors tank, and I was trying to do them a favor, so they could cook out. Ended up loaning them one of my tanks, so they could finish cooking. They took the bad tank, and exchanged it, and brought mine back in a day or two.

I don't know. This is just something I heard. But I heard that at least one of the exchange companies deliberately has something non-standard done to their valves so only they can fill them.

I would nit be a bit surprised to see that sort of thing going on. It was weird that for no good reason it would just not take on any gas.
