184 + junk mower

Postby SONNY » Sat Dec 10, 2022 8:22 pm

Auction today this turkey came up! Price was below parts value so ya it ended up in my dump trailer! Been sittin for eons, gas in the tank is well bad/nasty at best, motor stuck just a tad but rocking in gear got a bit of fan movement. didnt want to turn too much. Plugs out and soak the tops of the pistons first then turn over. The grille is in the truck and looks usable.
Front axle is good but the bell crank and steering gear are junk. I assume the electric clutch is junk also,---no 3-point. Radiator is full of antifreeze, motor oil full and not super dirty. Tires decent seat usable, steering wheel junk.
I figured on it as a parts unit but after looking closer I might need to try taking more parts off of my parts 185 if they will fit and have a184 that could be used for something EXCEPT mowing cause there is no creeper gear so mowing is out for it!
Anybody know if the 3-point from the 154 would fit? assuming the 184 frame is not broke!
Not to concerned about the pto right now,--- it has been messed up with some u-joint stuck on the shaft going from lo-boy shaft size to standard square so dont have a clue what that was ever used for! lol!
anyway now to figure out any differences between 154, 185, and 184 to see what I can scarf together for the "new" tractor.

a few pix after I got home, --- its still in the trailer but you can kinda get an idea of what it is. I had the telehandler operator fork it over the side of the trailer and it set down perfect without landing on its side! LOL!!!

O.k.,---- was unloading the 184 off the truck with a skidloader and when I let it down and backed the forks out from under it I had gear oil on 1 side! YUP,--- broke the cast iron housing on the left side and let the oil out! Split that sucker clear across and have NO idea what caught under there and broke it. might have been cracked but not leaking too since the tractor was royally abused by former owners. Finals from 185 look the same so I have one to put on it.
Hey! got the motor unstuck! Dumped some actual diesel fuel down the plug holes and after a day soaking I started rocking it back and fourth and motor started turning so I quit,--let it soak another day!
looks like 184 has an actual starter and not that POS belt drive thing. motor oil low and black so motor is probably toast.
Anyway IF I can get enough parts to piece this one back together, ---I kinda was thinking the 3-pt. off the 154 and the creeper gear out of one of the 185's. Also the pto clutch out of the parts 185 and all of the hardware that goes with it to get rid of that POS electric pto clutch which I can tell just by looking is junk!
Anyway the saga of the 184 goes on! Have a great day/night!!

The 3-point is interchangeable between the 185 and 184. That electric PTO might surprise you. There is a glass fuse on the dash for it. Try the PTO before you ditch it. It should click when engaged and disengaged with key on (12v battery connected)

That mower is a 3160a (nice mower deck) I mow in 2nd gear high range with my 184 & 3160a so this might not be a write off as a mowing tractor.

a couple more pix of the tractor. The original ignition switch is gone and they stuck a toggle switch and pushbutton switch in it. The clutch switch is real nasty and dont feel like its even working. Need to figure what the original switches were and try going back to that set-up.
This tractor has REALLY been abused so it will be quite a job to revive but little by little I want it running!
Dipstick barely has oil on it and black so motor is more than likely worn out too. Gotta get it started first then go from there. Rings, rods, and mains might help OR use the 154 motor, but the starter mount might be a problem on 154/185 blocks, dont know for sure.
IF all goes well, the creeper gear box added would be the cats meow for me, along with 3-pt, newer model tractor, LOL! MIGHT consider a mower of some kind under it! We see!
I can use my 3-pt landscape rake on this one too , nice light tractor to rake vines and stuff off the garden after harvest!

Found the electric clutch,--- FINALLY! --didnt expect to find it way up front! anyway it looks kinda so--so, and the dash switch is fried for sure but I will keep looking at it , IF it actually will work I will leave it for now.
Trying to decide if the rear end from the 154 would slide in the 184. That would save changing the 3 pt stuff. 154 got broken frame,---184 got broken final drive box! HMMMMM! Ideas? suggestions?

The final drive from the 154 should fit on a 184. The transmission should also fit but I am not certain the input shaft is identical.

Input shaft probably different due to the different clutch set up. Gotta do more looking and see what I can piece together! Have the motor loose now, wasnt stuck real bad, just stuck! -- anyway the dipstick shows oil is about empty and BLACK! engine probably worn out, could put one of the 185 motors in it, not sure how the starter would fit the 185 block,---just an idea!
Still want the 3-pt on it for light duty stuff! It would be handy around the garden acres. (4.5+ of them)! lol!

Block is the same. You would probably need to reuse the 184 flywheel.

I can swap whatever parts around as needed,--that would be easy enough to do. Thanks Jim!

Check hole where the starter fits on the 185 block. If there is any difference at all, it may be there. The 185 still had the starter/generator and the 184 had the starter on the flywheel.
I think the older 154 blocks had that starter hole 1/2 blocked off by a casting that could probably be ground out. Not sure if this is similar on the 185 block.
