154 PTO Clutch bearing replacement

Postby seanthenry » Mon Jun 29, 2020 2:49 pm

I'm sure I just looked in the wrong service manual and searched for the wrong thing. I have the service/parts manual with the diagram but it does not talk about rebuilding this.

I need to replace the 3 bearings between the forward and rear pto cam and need a little guidance.

I have removed the PTO from the tractor I'm to lazy to remove the pulley from the shaft so that is still on(not that removing it would be a problem).
Can I remove a snap ring on the tractor side of the cam to pull the old bearings out? When putting the new ones in I assume they should go in the cups and line them up to match (currently they are all in different locations)?

It there anything I should look out for when doing this?

Background:
The PTO worked when the transmission got stuck between gears. After putting the trans in neutral to move the tractor I tried starting it and tested the PTO but it would not catch. I figure this was from the "fix" the po they lost the spring on the pto lever and used bailing wire and a hook they added to the fender to keep it in place. That bent the PTO control arm. I have a new control arm bearing and spring hopefully that will get it up an running.

If I remember correctly there’s three bearings one with double vee belts in the front, a bearing before the pto clutch, and one in the pto clutch. The pto engagement has bearings too. The years of the 154 are different but the same design. If it’s disengaging the pto lever the bearings inside the engagement pto levers are wornout.

I have three int154’s, one ran but the pto needed bearings, the third one needed a clutch. The second one is my fel/ backhoe project. My point is by the time we gettem there run hard with no maintenance. They are a dream to mow with, push snow with.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Yeah I'm looking to replace the three bearings to lock up the clutch, they would be the closest to the yellow part here. https://hamiltonbobs.com/cart/product/p ... -lo-boy-mm

I loved the summer I got to cut with it half the time I did not have a real throttle and now that I have replaced 90% of the wires the engine is so much smoother. Later I will replace the ignition system and clean the carb.

The 2 brgs that lockup the clutch are part # 84250089..from CNH. CIH has 30 of these on hand. These work on the two eccentric plates.

Thanks for the part number but I already have the 3 bearings to lock up the PTO clutch. I just want to know do I have to remove everything from one end of the clutch shaft till the plates are separated or can I do it as one piece?

I got a little time to work on it last night I was able to pop the old bearings out and shove the new ones in. If I move the pto leaver like I'm engaging the PTO then one pops back out. I'm thinking it is the spacer just before the cam (Part 34 Parts catalog P27) might be worn giving it to much space. It looks like I might be able to tighten the locknut but the set screw is stripped so I have to drill that out and replace the screw.

Update: The 3 bearings would not stay in the set screw at the end was stripped out and I snapped my cheap extractor. I gave up on fixing that for now and bought a new PTO clutch, glad I did since I would have needed to rebuild the clutch pack since it measured a good bit smaller than the replacement.

Now the problems are the PTO belt squeals when engaging the PTO. I took the drivers side panel off and I could see the belt slipping that is closest to the driver. It seemed to have more play than the 1/16in it should have. I tried to tighten the adjustment screw but must have missed a step since it did not seem to make a difference. I also think I bent the adjustment L bracket a bit "Oops".

The other problem was I tried to line to pulley on the PTO up so I could put a pin in the PTO shaft. (Don't do that) So the pulley was to far in and not lined up with the lower pulleys as it should have been. I think that might have been some of the issue with the PTO belt. In removing the pulley I chipped a good inch off of it so I have a new one on its way.

Question, should the PTO spin when not engaged but no load on it?

GOOD news: It still moves, I found out the mower I have is a Woods 59LB. I need to adjust the throttle cable a bit then the carb idle and valves.

I finally had a min to check on the 154 yesterday and it turns out the reason the pto belt was slipping was... The idle pulley (mule drive) was ceased. I had checked the rest of the mower and they moved fine don't know why I did not check them before. I have ordered a new pulley actually 2 since the other one is almost dead also.

The pulley is part # 4336
The bearing is part # 6095 but I cannot find that to rebuild. Anyone know the specs or where to buy the bearing?

I think the 4336 pulley comes with a bearing installed. If not here is a ebay listing for replacement 6095 bearings.

Thanks I don't know why I did not find it on ebay when I was looking I must have only searched on the few parts sites.

Yes the 4336 is the pulley and bearing I believe the pulley only is 4335. I ordered the 4336 (they dont list the part numbers) from HamiltonBobs that way it is two less things I have to do to get it running. I will press in new bearings in the fall/winter to have an extra set or to sell.

Are one of the twin belts slipping? They come in a match set when twined up.

Note, On any tractor using a belt drive pto system always engage the pto at idle. With the big mower decks on the 154/184/185 I quickly jog the pto to get the mass moving then lock the pto in.

Yes the belt closest to the driver would slip. I might have to replace them but I'm hoping that replacing the woods pulleys will do the trick since they would not move. If not its time for an additional order from bob.

How many bolts do I have to loosen to adjust the tension on the PTO belt it looks like there might be 3 on the bearing flange/mounting plate, I know there are only 2 on the back one.

If I remember there’s a adjustment tension rod on the pto shaft and maybe a hinge bolt and a slotted bolt.

There is a rod/eye bolt that attaches to the Bearing plate for the PTO shaft. I will have to look at it during the day I think mine might be rusted in place (the mounting plate) or there is more than two bolts to loosen, because it did not seen to move when I tightened the bolt. I did manage to slightly bent the L bracket the tension rod runs through.

Seafoam Deep creep or Pb blaster is your friend on rusted stuck bolts. Once it’s loose put anti seeze on it.

Thanks for the help.
I got it up and running I did not need to adjust the PTO belt I will have fun with that when it starts going out on me.
It was the pulleys at the back of the mower having bad bearings.

Once I tossed the new pulleys on it fired up and started cutting. I have cut about 3 acres since then and only had the PTO belt slip once just before stalling cutting 1ft tall grass shag carpet.
