Horseradish

Postby Don McCombs » Sat Mar 19, 2022 9:26 am

If anyone is interested in establishing a horseradish bed, I have a few crowns left over from a recent dig. I'll send them to you for the cost of shipping. PM me if interested. First come, first served.

Last fall made horseradish from the Bohemian root. Excess was given to the ladies at the dental clinic. Next appointment the ladies wanted more. Told them I would provide them with starts.

Last week I gave them three plants worth of tops and roots. Enough to plant a good size plot.

That reminds me. Will check to see how much horseradish we have in the fridg. Getting close to horseradish making time.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I understand there is horseradish in cocktail sauce.

But what else is it good for?

All the horseradish crowns have been spoken for.

Horseradish is used as a condiment directly on ham, roast beef and corned beef. It is used as an ingredient in sauces and many other dishes. It has a pungent, hot flavor. But, the heat is not long-lasting like hot peppers are.

An Arby’s roast beef sandwich wouldn’t be the same without it!

I put some on everything I eat! --- just takes a little! Brings out the flavor of everything,--especially meats which are not very tasty nowdays anyway.
I make it straight but you can add mayo to it and have sauce instead of the real thing.

So THAT is where the horsey sauce name came from. I thought it was probably named after where they get the meat. :)

Ah! Come on Jim. 20 years in the military. I've eaten horse, dog, and other unidentifiable meats - wishing I had horseradish or other condiments.

A late friend used to make and sell a whole lot of horseradish, every year. People bought it up like crazy, it was the real deal! We made a small batch, a couple years ago and I was surprised, it was very good. A little dollop of that stuff and you feel like the top of your head is coming off. We need to make some again, we have a nice horseradish patch.

My one neighbor has mentioned to me that he thinks he has a patch of it next to his barn.

He just mows it as he mows the grass.

I should ask him if we could dig one up and see!

Our family never been a big user outside of cocktail sauce that I am aware of, but sounds like there might be some health benifits to add it to the diet!
