Farmall H Shifting

Good day everyone! I have a simple and yet necessary question on my end.

In shifting the H, is it designed to start in 5th from a dead stop or is it able to be shifted from any speed/gear? I'm mostly concerned with achieving forward and upward motion and not any sort of down-shifting.

Im noticing over time that the clutch may be wearing as it takes an extra second to shift from neutral to any gear without grinding. I'm not abusive to the H but I have put tons of time/mileage on it recently and am looking for a definitive explanation to ensure longevity.

Mine will start in 5th. I don't think any of these older tractors were meant to "shift" while moving; double-clutching may allow it, but they were intended to move from a dead stop in any gear. Choose the right gear for the job at hand, and go. 5th on an H is "going home" gear at the end of the day.

Yeah that's what I figured but wanted to make sure I wasn't unnecessarily killing the clutch trying to go from 0-17+mph. It feels like it grabs most times and there is no issue but there are other times when it bucks and slips where I just engage the clutch, back off of the RPMs and coast to a stop, shifting down.

Rick hit the nail on the head--no synchronizers. Just for giggles, here is one video on double clutching a Super M. Takes some practice! Just be careful!

I came here to post this video. I've been successfully using this technique to shift to 5th on my H and to grab 4th on my B for some time now. Works great!

My 1953 model H Farmall tractor wants to jump out of "road gear" while I'm driving...Anyone have repair ides?

I had a 340 Farmall that did the same thing for the 20 years that I owned it. Never got it fixed. I just wrapped my left ankle around the lever and held it in place. Worked good for me. :{_}: :{_}: :{_}:
