In the past I've done that as well, using a 2x12 as a ramp butted up next to the lip of the rim. The most recent ones required me to put a bottle jack between the sidewall of the tire and the underside of the truck.

I have used a vise with good success.

GREAT post... I needed to fix flat front tire yesterday, so I went off to Tractor Supply to get a farm jack. Had jack in cart, so thought to look at stands rather than scare up wood blocks to brace the tractor while working on the tire. What I found was the perfect item for this job a stand/jack combination.

I like that! So I guess the 22" max height it extends is enough to reach the axle? May have to get one of those...front wheel bearing packing scheduled this spring for my 3 cubs!
