Re: Front axle reinforcement for loader applications

I am in the process of installing a IH 1000 Loader on a standard 1952 Cub. The subframe and loader arm are installed. Hydraulics should be finished in the next week or so. I am looking to reinforce the spindle using the axel clamp method. I need to rebuild the steering gear box and the spindles. I like the idea of adding the thrust roller bearings to the spindle but I I don't how to do it. Some installation details would be greatly appreciated.

The original spindle setup is a brass bushing in the bottom of the tube and at the spindle where the weight is carried on the front. for normal use this is ok, but for a loader it makes steering difficult if carrying a load in the bucket. Remove the shaft from the tube, put a washer down the shaft, followed by the radial roller bearing then another washer on top. The reason for the washers is the brass is so soft the rollers of the radial thrust bearing would sink into it and make the steering worse. The washers must be hardened steel such as the ones McMaster sells along with the bearings. If your spindle knuckles have set screws you may have to grind a little off the top of the spindle tubes to get the setscrews into the holes in the shaft properly. If they are the clamp tight used on the later models, you may not have to make any modifications.

I would also suggest adding a strut to the assembly where the spindle tube is welded to the axle "knee" facing either forward or backward, since there is a lot of forward and rearward stress when moving. That was not mentioned in the article, but I added the struts to mine.

And a 60070 18” steering wheel helps drop the steering effort even more.

I forgot to mention that. One for a Farmall H goes right on, but it does reduce the clearance between your legs and the seat. The 1 inch difference in the radius of the steering wheel makes more difference than you would think.

My 52's axles have lots of scars from welding repairs before my uncle owned it from loader use pushing out a barn, it froze on the original owner the head cracked and the lower tank broke open he traded it in on an A with a loader. My Uncle bought it that way and had a buddy of his silver solder them both , the head held until a couple years ago the lower tank will probably outlive me. I think the loader is going to end up on the Lo-Boy once It's mowing duties are over at Mom's place it's going to need a job and it will free up the Cub for other duties that it's needed for , I will probably put the front end pieces from my parts tractor that are still really nice on it then. If you are redoing the steering box any way you may want to look into a 24 tooth gear ( after 1964) and steering shaft. JP tractor will have them.

No matter what you do the loader plus a load in the bucket will be work with the cub. Since I originally did this post I moved the ih1000 loader to a 130 that I purchased just to be the loader. I liked the loader on the cub a lot. I love it on the 130.

Sounds like it is time for a 12v conversion so you can run an electric power steering unit.
