freeze cracks fixed (new issue)

Postby smigelski » Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:35 pm

I JB welded the cracks and that seems to be holding, I just can't get the tractor to run long enough to make sure they hold. When I got the cub it only had a distributor. So I put all new wiring and switch. It starts right up and runs until the battery dies. I need an alternator. I just need to what 1 wire alternator fits without cutting the hood.

battery should run that cub for 2-3 weeks between charges
I charged "Ugly" for the first time since grass mowing season was done the other day however did not leave the charger on long enough only about 1/2 hour so when dropped off at Rick's it didn't want to start right.

Matt:

I think the Delco 10S1 is the best one wire around.. lots of em at junkyards and other second hand sources. The Hitachi 14231 is also a 1 wire, but I think it is a bit pricier. Check out the 12 Volt Conversion with a Hitachi 14231 Alternator article.

It is possible you got a bad battery.

A Cub will run quite a while on a stack of D cells, as long as the voltage adds up to whatever your system requires. A lead acid battery is probably cheaper in the long run.

The 10si Delco will work just fine. I think George has some really good pics of some mounted up on the cub. Mounted properly they are in my opinion better than the Hitatchi. I have seen some farmers mount the m totaaly bassackwards and had to cut the hood. They cost a whole lot less if you need to replace a reg or such in them where as for the Hitatchi the internals are pricy when bought to replace. Go with the Delco 10si and there will be no regrets.

Delco 10SI's are cheap & plentiful, also very easy to change over to one wire use. Podge, I suspected that Hitachi's were pricey, how does the Delce CS fit into the picture?

The small straight eared CS121 are awesome, finding the cores to use is the problem. I can convert them to 1 wire also and they are smalle than the 10si and about the same size as the Hitatchi. I am going to build 1 or 2 and try t bring them to a cubfest and show some of the guys how simple they are. I think we have been selling them for abouta $100 for customers at the shop.
