Getting ready to crank er up!

Postby wehuntsam » Fri Mar 07, 2008 2:00 pm

Progress continues on my 49 Cub. Just got my wiring harness and would like to make my last parts order so we can crank it soon. (yea, right)!

Can anyone tell me which voltage regulator is correct for a 49 Cub -serial number 65783? I see references to flat mounted and generator mounted.
Which is correct?

Re: plug wires - who offers the best set? I don't want any "will fits" with lots of extra wire.

Re: Battery Box - What's the difference between the $60.00 ones and the $129.00 ones. (Besides price)

Re: Battery Cables - Which is correct? Did this model have the braided cable?

My tractor was running as a 12 volt when I took it apart. I'm trying to decide if I should replace the magneto or not. Would the 12 volt convert affect the magneto?

When "cranking day" comes I don't want to be chasing down parts and possible problems if it doen'st crank.

The local shop priced a new one between $350.00 & $400.00 so that's out of the question.

Should I replace the rotor, etc. for a more affordable option?

As always, thanks for the valuable advice.

Sam

The Case/Ih dealer will sell you a set of plug wires that cover a few different models. You will have to cut them to length and attach the contacts and boots yourself.
The difference with battery boxes is Made in U.S.A. vs. Made in somewhere else like China and heavier gauge of material in the US made ones. Also the top originally had about 1/2" radius rolled lip where as the off shore are just formed square at the outside edge.

Your 49 would have been standard with a magneto and the mag doesn't connect to the electrical system in any way so it doesn't care whether you are running 6 or 12 volts.
It would also have had a cut-out and 4 position light switch rather than a voltage regulator.
The battery positive cable would have been a short cable that grounded at the top edge of the battery box, not a braided cable. It will be hidden inside the battery box so if you want to use a braided ground cable it will never be seen.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Cut Out?

Thanks Big Dog. You're a tremendous help. What's a "cut-out"?

A cut out is a manual version of the voltage regulator. When the generator outvoltage is lower than the battery voltage, the cut out opens so the battery will not drain back through the generator. When the generator output voltage is higher than the battery voltage, the cut out closes completing the path for the generator to charge the battery. The charge rate is controlled by the first two positions of the light switch. On low charge the generator field is grounded through a resistor on the back of the switch. On high charge, the generator field grounds directly through the switch.

Cut out

Postby wehuntsam » Fri Mar 07, 2008 4:48 pm

My cub has the origingal light switch. I'm not sure of it's condition.

I may have messed it up today when I glass beaded it!

Is this the same as TM - Stock# EL1536
lighting switch
6 volt ?

Sam - no. It is the replacement for the 3 position switch that is used with a voltage regulator. I don't think anyone is making a replacement for the 4 position switch at this time.

Actually, I was browsing that site, http://www.farmallcubforever.com looking at that replacement PTO shifter, and I came across this light switch

I was really surprised to see it... Doesn't look like the original, but it does appear to have a field resistor in the circuit... or is it really only the light dimming resistor? Has anyone used this switch and does it work??

Just wondering...

PS, I tried to post a picture of it, but couldn't get it to work...

That looks like the '58 and up 4 position (O D B R) switch, rather than the up to '50 4 position (L H D B) switch.

I was wondering that same thing as I was posting the link... Thanks for that clarification, Jim...

My 49 cub also has this setup. The 4 position switch is there but it looks pretty rough. I guess I will attempt to test it. If the switch is no good do most people add a voltage regulator?

Does anyone tar the inside of the battery boxes? We did that on the trucks and busses so the battery acid gasses won't eat the paint and then the metal so quickly. They last much longer when tar'd. You let the tar harden then put in the battery.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Bill, you would have to keep the tar pretty thin, there isn't much surplus room in there.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
