Draining Final Drive

Postby BIGHOSS » Sun Dec 23, 2007 4:53 pm

Am I correct, in the way you change oil in final drives is to remove pan? If that is true, would there be any benefit in welding a pipe female fitting on the bottom, so a plug could be removed to drain oil?

I apologize to Rick (always coming up with a good one)Dulas

Yes you just pull the pan and drain. hmm you could add a plug i woould say that would work to. but i like to pull them and check for sludge that built up etc...

I was thinking about possibly saving replacing the pan gasket each time.

Speaking of RTV, this has been discussed before, but tell me the best type RTV to use in various applications, red, blue, black, etc.

I do to Andrew, I don't care much for anything cork or paper...
Most of your new cars come with RTV on their oil, trans, and differ. pans and some of those places are under pressure...
Works great for me!

I've used it all in the past 25 years at work, all about the same but I favor the black myself... give it a few min. to get tacky before placing it on and it seals great.
Some people get in trouble by coating paper gaskets with it.
It likes to eat some of the paper gaskets so use it alone and you'll be fine...
