Haydraulic leak problems

Postby Osageage » Fri Jan 26, 2024 8:24 am

The hydraulics on my 1953 Cub work well BUT:
1. After discovering hydraulic fluid leaking into my engine, I removed and rebuilt the pump. I inspected the shaft into the engine and it seemed fine. The fix worked but lasted only two weeks, then began leaking again into the engine. I store the tractor with blade up in the air. Any ideas on what could be the problem and how to fix it?
2. After snowblading for an hour or two, I notice a very minor leak out of the bottom of the left side of the hydraulic reservoir. Is that something I should worry about, or should I just live with it?

The leak on the left side of your TC Block is quite possibly be just the o-ring on the control rod. Replacing this does not require disassembly of the block, but unless you are a masochist, you need to go ahead & remove the block to access the control rod. I expended twice as much energy trying to replace that o-ring in place, finally removing & doing it MUCH more easily.

Plus, it gave me a chance to inspect & clean the block & boots properly so I would know if the leak issue was resolved!

FYI...that o-ring is an odd size, but is available from TM Tractors:

Thanks, Dale. I’m actually more concerned with the hydraulic fluid leaking in to my engine oil.I think the source has to be the o ring on the pump shaft that goes into the engine, but I just rebuilt the pump including replacing that o ring with a new one.

You may have nicked or rolled the o-ring during installation. Another possibility is the area on the pump shaft where the o-ring rides may be worn or rough, causing the new o-ring to fail prematurely. I would pull the pump and check for these issues. When installing a new o-ring, it should be thoroughly lubed to prevent a re-occurrence.

Thanks, Don. I’ll pull the pump, and check it out.
