Head bolt removal fear....conquered

Postby Leewebb7 » Fri Jan 12, 2024 9:13 pm

Today was the day I faced my fears...I got the head off with out breaking any bolts!!....victory!!....I had to see what I was working with...here's a few pics...I noticed my pistons aren't flat on top....the head gasket was all steel...i got an engine gasket set to throw in there when I get time. I just buttoned everything back up for now until I can get to it...

Your tractor looks to be an early one. The domed pistons were not introduced until 1968 so at some point your engine was rebuilt/ pistons replaced.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

The serial number says its a 1951...I didn't know that about the pistons....I thought it looked pretty clean to be 70 some years old... haha

Anyone think it would be OK to use the same head bolts since the motor was re built??...they all seemed fine to me. They either didn't have sealer on the threads or the sealer stayed down in the bottom. They all came out clean.

Maybe the rebuilder thought the same thing. If it was me, I’d replace them.

The picture of the piston looks like it's stamped .040 which means the engine was bored that when the domed pistons were installed.

Others will have suggestions on what to get and where to get them.

It means that the cylinder was bored .040" over standard. The piston and rings would then also be oversize to match the bore size. I'm not sure that stainless steel is appropriate for the head bolts, but someone can confirm or correct that statement.

Looks like several valves have been replaced too. There are 2 flavors of intake valve and 3 of exhaust.

From either end:
E I I E E I I E

Look at openings from the valves to the manifold. Half of them line up with manifold passages to the exhaust, the other half toward the carburetor.
