Spark no spark

Postby Royalwulff24 » Tue Dec 12, 2023 7:01 am

Thank you, got the weak/no spark issue fixed, still wouldn't start, checked timing, everything was where it should be tdc, took #1 wire off plug, hand cranked engine, it sparked about 1/8" past what the manual calls #1 mark, I marked it with a pencil and tried it 2 more times to make sure, Does that mean it needs retarded to get it to spark when it's supposed to , and if that's the case, is CCW retarding , and CW advancing ? Thank You in advance

What year tractor do you have? Are there one or two timing marks? Mag or battery ignition?
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

At cranking speed, spark should occur at TDC. Ignition timing retarding causes the spark plug to fire later in the compression stroke. It seems that you need the spark to occur earlier than when it is firing in the compression stroke. This is known as advancing (not retarding) ignition timing. Advancing would be CCW.
