Over-running clutch for Cub PTO

Postby Dave Downs » Fri Jul 14, 2023 5:13 pm

I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of one. I THINK I may have heard of a mower for the Cub that had one built into the mower driveline but I could be wrong.

If there is such a thing it would really make my Woods 59 finish mower much easier for beginners to a standard transmission to operate…

many of the woods 59 came with one, if not lubed they seize up and do not work, look at the parts book and you can see it, they did sell it at one time as an assembly but I am sure its now costly like everything else, it would disengage when you step on the clutch

I thought it was the Woods 42” had a overrunning clutch.

I don’t think you would need one for the Woods 59, when I push the clutch in, the 59 stops turning right away.

I’ve operated/worked on 4 separate Woods 59 mowers, none of them had an overrunning clutch.

On all of them, with the PTO engaged and the tractor in gear, when you push in the clutch the spinning blades on the mower will ‘push’ the tractor forward 6-8 feet unless you can get the transmission out of gear quickly, hard to do if you are on an up-grade/down-grade.

I’d really like to see a picture of the overrunning clutch used on a Woods 59.

I do not recall seeing/having an overrunning clutch on any finish mower for my cubs. The c2 and Woods 42 both have them built into the spindle. While the push is there on the finish mowers I personally see less of a need. The PO of my C2 welded the clutch solid and the heavy blades of the C2 would push the tractor around a good deal. For safety's sake, I felt I had to get the clutch working again.

I started using a pull-behind pto driven mower on my 140 and installed an after-market pto clutch on the PTO of the tractor. Those mowers really push the tractor around But I have not seen an aftermarket one for sale for the Cubs PTO.

There was a post about 10 years ago with a picture but I couldn’t find it. My smaller yard has slope, trees, low branches, rocks, propane tank, fence, and play equipment. When mowing since the riding mower blew up I have to be very careful. I have been thinking of welding up a pto spline adapter, 540 over running clutch — installed backwards for rotation— and a pulley. About $200 in parts.

Edit.
March 24, 2011. Post about removing pulley. Had problem adding as quote.
