Put the Cub to work

Postby IHCubCadet147 » Mon Jul 10, 2023 7:26 am

I finally got to try out my sickle mower, this was my Cub’s first real job. I mowed along the sides of our mile long private road. I did half Tuesday, then the other half Saturday. Probably about 2 1/2 hours total. Everything went well, the tractor ran great, and the road looks a lot better now.

The first picture is before. That area was not as overgrown as some other areas.

Hi,
Good that you have the mower working.
It looks like in your pics that the height needs adjusting, it's too high.
If the chain to the Touch Control arm has extra, unused links, adjust it down 1 or 2 links, the top of the cast part in the pic below, with the 2 big holes, should be about level with the ground, when the mower is fully up.
The pic is from TM Tractor Parts.

The grass board at the outer end of the mower isn't supposed to hang down so much when the mower is raised. The ones I have seen have a notch made in them, forward of the bolt that holds it on the mower. The notch fits under a place that sticks out of the casting, so the board can't drop down.
There should be a spring on the bolt to hold the board in against the outer end of the mower.
Below are pages from the Cub implement parts manual, it shows the spring for the bolt is number 25 in the pic. I searched some for the part number, and there are some online.

It think the outer skid may be gone, it is number 5 in the parts pic above.
It has a special bolt with a large thin square head that fits in the slot made in the outer shoe, to adjust it up and down.
The part number of it and the bolt are explained on the page below.

http://www.farmallcub.info/manuals/cbi- ... e%2071.jpg

Below is a listing for the bolt on ebay, you can look at the pictures.
My mower has a nut and lock washer on the bolt.

I have a grass board about the same as yours, I think, your pics of the grass board aren't close up.
I don't have pics of one assembled.
My bolt has a small hole through it, at the nut, and a cotter key, to keep the nut from coming off.
Adjust the nut on the bolt so the spring has enough tension that the board is held in, but will move up and down.
Your board might be bent, I can't see it good in the pics. My board is flat metal where the bolt is.
If your grass board has 2 holes for attaching it to the mower, use the hole that makes the notch fit at the casting, so the board doesn't fall down when the mower is raised.

The grass rod is loose. It must have been left like that for a while. The threads on the bolt are all messed up, so I will have to get a new one. I was thinking about just taking it off for now. It seems like it just pushes the the cut grass back out of the way for the next pass. What I posted pictures of is probably all I will ever be mowing with this, so I don’t think I really need it.

I didn’t see anything in the manual about how to adjust the chain. I just put the mower on the ground and hooked it to the first link that reached the TC arm. I will drop it down some.

Yes, that is missing. Thanks for pointing it out. I will get one ordered.

Thanks. Yeah, it was fun. I just wish I had a bigger area to mow with it, but I don’t.

Hi,
Yes, the grass board moves cut grass so you can see where the uncut grass is on the next pass around the field, or area. If you have short grass, you can remove the grass board.

There isn't much in the Cub 22 Mower operator's manual about adjusting the height of the mower.
Usually the chain has 2 or 3 extra links that aren't used.
I don't know if your chain does, or if it's been replaced.
I adjust the chain so the bar just touches level ground when the Touch Control lever is about 1/2 of the way to the rear, and the arms are about 1/2 of the way to the rear, when the bar is down in the cutting position.
Then there should be slack in the chain in the 1/2 more lever movement to the rear.
The slack is so the bar will stay on the ground, when you move the lever fully to the rear, and the bar can cut below level some, at the outer end, if needed.
The inner and outer skids have height adjustments, you can adjust them so the cut is a little above the ground, if you want.
There is also an adjustment to twist the front of the bar up or down. Adjusting it so the guards are about level helps keep them from digging into the ground.
The manual may have info about adjusting those adjustments.

Thanks. There are a few extra links, I will move it down tomorrow, and see how it does. If it doesn’t rain, my neighbor wants me to cut some stuff in his yard.
