Mott Flail?

Postby Txag79 » Sun Jul 02, 2023 4:29 pm

I've recently acquired a Cub (1950) with a mid-mounted flail mower. No markings, decals or plates left on the flail mower anywhere. I've seen photos of similar units that called theirs a Mott D9. I referenced a Mott D9 parts/owners manual, but the suspension or hanging mechanism in the Mott book looks different than my unit.

Does anyone know if there were other manufacturers that made an undermount flail for the Cub, or can I just assume that what I have is a Mott? (I will post a photo, but I think I need to generate some posts first?)

Many thanks!!

Welcome. One more post and you can open the mower unit located in Quick links, upper left of this page.

Post photos.

There were/are other manufacturers of flail mowers.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Mott made at least two styles, both at the drawbar attachment and in the lift parts. So some difference from one you find in a picture doesn't necessarily mean yours is not a Mott.

A Mott is a nice mower. The cub however does not have the power to cut tall grass with it (over knee high) Once one pass is made half swathing can be done rather easily with the mower just hanging on the chains. The next day or after a little drying go bacck and it can make a smooth cut. I recently mowed the yard because the Cadet needed repair and it does a nice job at that too. Clumbsy (sp?) however. A nice piece of equipment to have! Vern

There is an electric "Knife Sharpener" made to sharpen all 100+ knives, too. They come up for sale rarely, but maybe you'll get lucky or someone in you area has one you can borrow! Like this (not mine...just saw it when I googled it):
