74 stops dead when cutting will not start

Postby inairam » Sat May 20, 2023 7:28 pm

I was using my 74 today and was about 10-15 minutes into cutting and it stopped dead and will not start. I was in a field with no tools. I pulled the coil plug to the distributor and did not see a spark from the coil wire when I cranked it. I never replaced the coil on this tractor. It was a runner and I have had it for maybe 5-6 years so I suspected the coil.

I walked back to the barn a got a coil ( NAPA in the box) and some tools ( did not bring a multimeter to test 12v at the coil) I replaced the coil and no joy. ( BTY it was in IH Coil maybe from 1974!)

The tractor cranks very well and started several times today with no problem.

I know I have to test for 12v at the coil but after that any suggestions? This has been a very reliable tractor.

Could the key switch go back for ignition but not for starting?

was the old coil hot ?
points and condenser go bad also
check for 12 volts at coil
found several of the key style switches corroded and melt on the back of the switch

And loose wire.

Put old coil back on and try to restart. Does, bad coils.

Didn't work, start checking for voltage at the distributor. No voltage work back towards ignition switch then the starter terminal.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I recently had a no start condition from a cub that had previously started and ran well. Short version of the story is fire when the points opened and closed, no fire from the distributor cap center to ground. 2 hours later after trying a lot of options, I concluded that the coil was shorted internally on the high voltage side. Replaced it with a known good coil and immediately started and running well. JMHO. Stan

For a no start, I always consider the point #1 suspect. Make sure they are clean and properly adjusted.

I had 12v at the coil so I went into the distributor - broken spring on the points. replaced points and Condenser in the field started right up. this is why I switched to napa ignition products. 4th non napa point spring that broke on me. also put the ih coil back on!

If it just cut out once warmed up it's likely ignition. Check coil, points, condensor, etc. I've had cars in the past do that and it was always ignition related (coil, ignition module, etc).
