How heavy of a wagon load can the Cub pull?

Postby ShawnAgne » Mon Apr 03, 2023 7:24 pm

Building my daughter a clubhouse (basically a 10x14 second story deck above the existing swing set). Was pouring concrete piers and had to haul the quickrete out to the job site. Had 20 80lb bags so I just hauled 5 at a time (what I needed per post). Got me wondering what is the maximum that it can haul in a wagon?

I wouldn’t hesitate to tow my 5K boat with mine but it’s pretty level ground.

The amount a Cub will pull can be surprising. The scary part is stopping it especially if it's on a hill (uphill or downhill). That's where it can get dangerous.

Nebraska tractor tests says it can drag 1600 on the ground in first gear!

I can move a loaded wagon on concrete with properly inflated tires by hand weighing 4 to 5000#

The 1,600 in that Nebraska test is drawbar pull. The test car weighed much more.

Back in the day, we would typically pull a wagon weighing 2+ times the weight of the tractor. I don't think we were particularly safe when we got to the high end of that weight. Getting it moving was fairly easy. Stopping or holding it on a hill was nearly impossible.

I always thought their pull test was like the equivelent of how they have horse pulls.

They put a coupling between the tractor drawbar and the test car that continuously measures the pull force. The major component of the coupling is a hydraulic cylinder. Pulling force is determined by measuring the fluid pressure in the cylinder. The test car has a ground driven wheel to measure distance. Put those two measurements together with time and you have horsepower.

If it is a wagon and not a trailer and it is level ground I would have had most if not all of the bags on the wagon.

As everyone commented the issue is not pulling it is stopping. If the route was hilly I would keep the load light.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Everything has its limitations!

I have a brother that used to work at a semi-local fabrication / machine shop that did / does really large jobs.

And there was a slope on the drive from the main road to the plant.

My brother said some jobs were so heavy that the trucking company would bring a extra semi truck to help push the load up the grade to get on the main road. If the two drivers were not in unison, one would spit out the driveshaft.

Now I been there and did not think that was a bad slope.

But just goes to show, everything has limits!

I bet many would be shocked at the Cub's ability to move a load on a wagon (or two or three).

For safety, also is the ability to stop.

And resistance, weight, grade (hill up or down), and many other factors that are not coming to mind at the moment will be major factors in that ability.

Change the equasion and the outcome changes too.

There are pics online of a Cub pulling a 52R combine with a power unit. Bare machine is in the neighborhood of 2500 lbs.

I decided to try it with the 49 Cub I used to have. As soon as I could turn around and get it back to the shed, I unhooked and put the Super A on it! Eastern NC is flat, but in soft ground the Cub would have been absolutely helpless.

Well like everyone has said. Pulling is easy , stopping that’s something else

On hard level ground, and with a tow dolly, I think a Cub would pull it! (First gear)

If you want to stop, just add trailer brakes and a controller!
