Purchased a 49 F Cub # 94801, Saturday at an auction. Brought it home this morning.
DSCN2479.JPG

Originally went to the auction for a 7 foot rotary cutter for my JD A. Saw this cub, another 49 with a blade and a 48 with a belly mower on the web site when I was prevuing the auction. This cub and the one with the blade were parked together so I though I would bid on the one with the blade. They both were advertised as non running. I went and looked at the other cub and the three 7 foot cutters. When I got back to the first two cubs there was a girl about 12 years old sitting on the cub with the blade and her dad had it running. She was telling him how much she wanted it for her first tractor. I thought I am not going to bid against them since she wanted it so bad. I payed a little more than I thought a non running cub was worth $725. The girl got the cub with the blade for 50 dollars more than I paid for mine. The 48 cub sold for $1200, it was advertised as running. The first two rotary cutters when a lot higher than I was willing to pay so I left before the third one came up for sale. Of course it went cheap. Now to get the cub unloaded and in the shop to see what it needs to get running.

Congratulations on your purchase. Hopefully the engine is free. When l read threads about frozen Cubs l cringe a little.

Good luck and keep us posted on progress.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over. :?:

Yes the engine is free. I checked both cubs before I decided to bid.

Well if the engine is turning you’ve got a good chance of getting it running. I see it doesn’t have rear wheel weights, but it has a complete battery box. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'd like to be the first to commend you on thinking of that little girl. She may not have noticed or her dad but you did the right thing. Awesome! :D

Yes I got it at the Canning auction. The lady at the counter this morning said it took over 11 hours to get through the auction.

Pulled the hood, drained the radiator, drained transmission and drained engine oil. Antifreeze looked good with no floaters. Tranny oil had the usual water with it. Engine oil was at the full mark, just dark with no extras. The cylinder head had been repaired. I am going to order a new one from TM because the weld on the head was separated on the edges. Motor had been worked on recently because it had .020 over pistons in it, all new valves and no carbon build up in the head. Will pull the pan and see what the bottom end looks like. Hope to drain hydro oil and finals to see what surprises are in there in the next few days.

Shiny paint here, fairly fresh primer there, looks like someone cared a little bit about their cub. Sounds like the fluids were respectable as well. Bet you'll have it running in short order.

Drained hydraulics and refilled. Fluid that was in it was clean. Worked on getting some of the play out of the steering. Steering box was full of grease. I got out as much as I could and then filled with 80/90. No leaks over night. Clutch, pressure plate and TOB look fairly new. Must have been changed when the engine was rebuilt. Hope to have parts from TM Monday so I can get the engine closed backup. Missing the cover on the front of the bell housing, another part to add to my JP list.

Went to JP's on Wednesday and got my parts from TM on Thursday. Put the head on and pulled the carb apart to clean it. Thought I had a starter switch that mounts to the starter, could not find, it so I ordered one, pieces for the headlights and some other parts. Got some nice looking 9.5 - 24's from JP. Hopefully it will warm up enough to sand blast the rims and paint them so I can get it back on four wheels.
