Before installing, I'd suggest pumping cheap, low temperature grease into the zerc until grease comes out the weep hole on the opposite side. Some of the aftermarket ones come "empty".

Re: throwout bearing should be soaked in oil?
This is an example of "cheap" grease;
The idea is to use a grease that allows the oil to separate easily from the base.
This is a brand new throwout bearing that we cut apart at CubFest NE 2011 that had failed.

- Bearing was not soaked in oil before installing.
- Wrong grease used.
- Cavity not filled to the point of coming out the hole opposite the zerk.
We also suspect the "liner" may have contributed to premature failure even if the proper and sufficient grease had been used.

I keep a spare TO bearing "marinating" in cheap grease, in a plastic bag. Always ready, if I need it.

the first one I did was greased but not soaked in oil prior to install. It went in about 3-4 months.

Re: throwout bearing should be soaked in oil?
I have contemplated the idea of squirting the grease cavity full of oil while the bearing is soaking in oil. Then pump grease in place of the oil at install time. I haven't actually tried it.

Jim, that sounds like a good idea! Wonder if my grease fitting cleaner, filled with oil, would accomplish this?

Or remove the zerc, hold your finger over the weep hole pointed down, and use a squirt can to fill it until it comes out the zerc hole pointed up.

If the holes are open wouldn't the oil flow into there as much as the air bubbles trapped inside would allow.

Re: throwout bearing should be soaked in oil?
I was going to check that it is a threaded fitting, but thought the pump oil can was the way to go.
I'm not sure how many times the grease fitting cleaner would need to be refilled.

A regular grease gun will pump oil.
We pump penetrating oil in the kiln car bearings at work to loosen the hard dried up grease after they come out of the kiln.
