normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
Hello, I am new to the world of Cub ownership. I have just purchased a 1947 Farmall Cub. It has a junk underslung exhaust on it at the moment. By junk i mean it is all flex pipe. I would like to get opinions as to weather to spend the big money to get all the proper underslung parts or just go with removing the elbow and putting on a normal pipe and muffler. I am not mowing in an orchard to need the overhead clearance. I am currently thinking of switching back to the more normal exhaust. So what do you guys think?

Re: normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
If you decide to switch to the upright exhaust, you might want to replace the manifold, rather than trying to remove the elbow. They really are stuck in place, after 70+ years.
Upright exhaust can blow in your face, and underslung doesn't, ust another thing to consider.

Re: normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
It’s strictly a matter of personal preference. I, myself, would go with the vertical exhaust but others will jump through hoops to get an underslung exhaust. Not much help, was I? Welcome to the forum.

Re: normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
Personally I like the sound of a straight pipe without a muffler. If you get the elbow out all you would need is an 18 inch piece of black pipe from Home Depot or any hardware store. Get it a little longer and cut off one of the threaded ends.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
I agree with Ed...though I personally prefer the underslung exhaust, I think the easiest and tidiest solution for you would be remove & replace the exhaust manifold, then buy the black pipe from Lowe's or Home Depot, as Bill suggested.
And, if you buy a 3' pipe, you can cut it in half, and have TWO exhaust pipes the proper length for use with a muffler.
Of course, this is assuming that the hole in your hood is still there for the pipe!

Re: normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
More than likely your 47 was only offered with the proper vertical exhaust.
Is the hole in the hood for it?
A vertical exhaust is cheaper.
And a vertical exhaust dont fumigate you when hitching something up out back.
Oh, and dont forget if you go vertical and you add a flapper up top to put your flapper on right.
The flapper should open towards the front or towards the left side.
Proper use of heat from a acetylene torch on the manifold and the pipe will unscrew out easily
Ps.
If your not going to plow up a garden or field, you can remove that depth control lever to the right of the seat and put it away for future use or to sell!

Re: normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
To remove the exhaust elbow I used a Sawzall (a hacksaw will work) to cut it off just above the manifold then used a mini hacksaw to split the stub. Once the stub is split lightly hitting it with a punch or screwdriver will bend it inward away from the threads. Work around the circumference and eventually you'll get the stub out. If you cut some of the threads just put pipe dope on the threads of the black pipe when you screw it in.

Re: normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
Since the underslung elbow is not original for a 1947, it is possible it has not been in the manifold for a long time. I would spray it liberally with your favorite lubricate such as Kroil, PB Blaster, etc. Give it a good tap with a hammer now and then and try to back it out. Don't rush it. If it doesn't budge the first time, spray it again and try the next day. If after several days it doesn't come loose, try cutting it off just above the threads and use the hacksaw method inside the pipe.

OEM was the vertical pipe...
I take my Cub through wooded trails. The vertical pipe knocks down the spider webs before my face does.

I was with you up to this point. If it won't come out, I'd consider finding another manifold. Those elbows run $50.

This is true. You could buy another manifold and sell, or hope to sell, the one you have.

Re: normal opposed to Underslung exhaust
Vertical or under slung is kinda a personal preference thing , I like the look of vertical but the underslung is never in the way and won’t put fumes in your face I cut my rusted and busted vertical pipe off same method as Radioguy it was easy two counts and the remainder peeled right out with needle nose vise grips .

Given the description of the exhaust system, I'd be willing to bet that the "elbow" is not what you guys think it is.
