serial plate
So what is the general thought on here regarding replacement of serial plate with the new ones? Mine is readable for stampings, but everything else is gone. Tractor has been restored and this would be a nice touch IMO. If I were to go this route, what is the best way to remove / replace rivets? Also, how are the stampings replicated?

Re: serial plate
I'm all for it if anything like mine covered in old paint and almost unreadable after removing old paint grease etc. I used i real small flat bar i got at Lowes used to remove delicate house trim and pried the ribbets out. Then cleaned holes out with a drill bit the same size. To put back in just use a small ballpean hammer and flat punch if needed if hard to reach to hammer thr nrw ribbits in.

Re: serial plate
Hi,
You didn't say the year of the Cub.
There were 3 different serial number plates used through the years Cubs were made.
If the plate is good where the numbers are, you could use one of the decals that member tst sells.
They look good.
Send him a PM and he will probably send you pictures of them.
You just stick it on the plate you have.
If you buy a new plate, the model name, and numbers have to be put on by someone with stamps that look like the originals, they have said on here it might not be easy to find original looking stamps.
The model name on many of them are lettering, not stamping.
TM Tractor has new plates, at Specialty & Misc.
They have said on here to use a thin putty knife to get behind the plate, close as you can to the rivets, and gently pry and work the rivets out some, then you can use pliers on them probably.
Below is one of tst's decals, for the mid 1950's and newer plates.
The place where the serial number is lets the number be seen.

Re: serial plate
If the serial tag is still there, I would not remove it. I’d use one of Tim (tst) Talleur’s overlays.

Re: serial plate
my cub is a 1950. I had seen the ones on TM website. I was unaware of the decal overlay, I may go this route as to leave original tag in place. Thanks for the info!

Looks original to me. I would opt for one of tst's overlays.

Re: serial plate
Hi,
The plate and numbers look original, my opinion.
The numbers are in the right places on the plate, if you compare it with the new plate for a 1950 Cub at TM Tractor.
I would try dissolving the red paint off the plate with paint thinner on a rag before putting the decal on the plate.
It will probably look better to have the plate all the same aluminum color before putting the decal on it.

Re: serial plate
cleaned tag a bit, its hard to see in first pic so I tried another, but the vin numerals are not block like I have seen on others. If you look closely, they look like old english type text. Is this correct? My other newer 60/70s IH tractors just have block type numbers stamped. Just trying to get corrrect, not that it matters, but it nags at me.

Re: serial plate
It looks original, to me, early Cubs had that style text. It also looks like a great candidate for Tim’s overlay. I have them on all 3 of mine.

Re: serial plate
Hi,
TM Tractor has pictures of Cub serial number plates.
It looks like the style of stamped numbers your Cub has was used in 1950, and 1951, in the pics they have.
Below is their gallery.
http://www.tmtractor.com/tm-tractor/gse ... plates.htm
Below is 1 of their pics of a 1950 plate, they have blurred part of the serial number.
Yours has the 1 and 7 you can compare, the style looks the same.

Re: serial plate
Before you install the overlay, you might try wiping the numbers with some black paint, removing all the excess, so the numbers are a bit more readable.
