2 front cover plate gaskets. which one to use
I purchased a complete gasket set from steiner for my 47' cub. There seems to be 2 gaskets for the large front cover plate that covers the timing gear and the cam gear. Only difference is that one gasket goes completely around the governor and the other one doesn't. I am wondering which is best. Thank-you

Hi,
It says at TM Tractor the 2 gaskets are for different engine serial number ranges.
Below are their listings, it tells the engine serial numbers and years in the listings.
A 1947 Cub uses the 1st gasket, if it has the original engine, or an engine up to the number shown.

The engine serial number is stamped in the block, on the left side, above the oil filler tube.
Below is a page from a Cub owner's manual showing where it is.
You might need to clean the area, and use a light to see it.
Maybe you knew already.

Look at the front of your engine block. If the block has a gasket surface that goes all the way around the governor, use the gasket that goes all the way around the governor.
