66 Cub restoration paint questions

Postby 72chevelle » Mon Feb 28, 2022 6:43 pm

So I am working on getting my Cub running after a bunch of years. I bought this thing from a tractor dealer years ago and I noticed right off it was the newer bright yellow cub cadet color. I wasnt worried since its just a work tractor for me. I did however go ahead and rebuild the engine since it was seriously low on compression. I noticed the engine after coming outta the tank was red. then while I was wirebrushing some grease off I noticed the torque tube looked red as well. Did Cub use a red ozide primer on these first or was this a red tractor to begin with? Also I only have a tractor supply here and the Cub cadet yellow looks too dark to me but maybe I am crazy. Do they call it Federal Yellow or have they renamed it now?

Thanks a bunch!!

welcome to the forum, 66 Square nose is a yellow and white cub, found the best quality and decent cost is right from the IH Dealer, yellow I got a couple months ago for about $60 a gallon, quarts are near $20 each, use a hardner if you want the color to last

Hi,
Welcome to the website.

Yes, it is Federal Yellow that IH used when the yellow and white Cubs came out, beginning in 1964.

Below are listings for spray cans of Case IH paint at TM Tractor, you can look at the colors of the caps.
Case IH dealers sell this paint also.
They have quarts also, the last I know of.
People on here have said the IH paint lasts well.

I guess this is the white that they use for the yellow and white Cubs, maybe someone that knows will say.

The yellow and white Cubs I have seen on here have a redish primer under the paint.
Sometimes the yellow comes off in places, and the primer can be seen in pics.
The primer is not as bright red as the red paint used on Cubs.

Below is silver, it can be used for the rear wheel rims. :)

Awesome. Thanks. I don’t believe I have a dealer near me, I have gotten a few cans of tractor supply paint that is 8-22950-8 cub cadet yellow. Looks kinda close but I can’t really tell. I just want it to look decent and stop rust. From here I need to descale the gas tank and get 2 front tires, also gotta find some rear wheel weights cause this thing looks weird without them. ( I did liquid fill the tires though.

Check around, you should be able to find someone who will ship the IH Ironguard paint to you. That paint at TSC is garbage.

There is a CaseIH dealer (Hoober's) in Ashland, if you travel to that area.

I am the proud owner of a 1966 Cub. It’s in various shades of yellow and white. I have the red spots you’re talking about and figured it was primer. Good luck on your restoration!
