One thing IH should have gave the Cub

They should have given the Cub a differential lock!

That would have been great!

I think that I-H had it about right. There is not hardly enough power to spin both at the same time.. :D

All jokes aside, they are pretty well thought out little tractors for something designed in the 1940's.

You can get that with the breaks. For the few times you may need it, a simpler drive train is a better value over the life of the tractor.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

I wonder what the designers of the 40’s could have accomplished with today’s technology

I think a split easy to remove hood would have been a far better feature to have designed into the cub.

I doubt that some of the tractors built today will still be around 75 years from now. They have to many things that will wear out or just break.

Grew up just using the brakes to do the job on any brand of old tractor. It's an automatic reaction and I don't even think about it even now at 65. If it's not in your dna I can understand the issue. But did have to chuckle at the comments such as, not enough power to spin both rear wheels at the same time anyway. And this from folks who love their Cubs.

I use the brake trick too, but there is no comparison to a tractor that has a differential lock!

I can engage a diff lock in anticipation of a problem, but with the brake trick the problem has to show up before I react!

Seems as a differential lock was not very common till the late 60's early 70's!

Pretty sure it is standard on any real tractor now!

Satoh 65-g has it so does my Sunstar20's and yes it is WAY better than the brakes. Cubs will spin both wheels at the same time, altho rare.
as for the hood--- well I found this on one for sale!

All I know is you'll be hard pressed to find a tractor in the $1500-$2500 range that will do what a Cub will do day in and day out. Tractors are out there with more power, better hydraulics, power steering and a diff lock but you'll pay for those extras.

I am really in awe of what engineers were able to design and build and the equipment that did so back in those times. It's really impressive and fascinating to me

Sure could use that hinged hood on mine. The generator that came with my cub is from a Super M. The oil caps don't come any where near lining up with the holes in the hood. Only way for me to lube it is to remove the tank/ hood combo. Not a big task but still makes that hinged hood look practical.
